from ch7 news....

YouTube - Rutgers Class President Caught Robbing Dorms with Boyfriend

Should be noted, Rutgers is a declining school.

First video: Many drunkards go to the school. This is becoming intensified as the school pours money into the football program whilst cutting academic programs. Obviously, more idiots will be applying and accepted to the school as they lower their standards. THOUGH, it is possible many of those in that video don't even go to Rutgers.

Second video: Well, that is just the consequence of having the campuses in urban settings. Far more horrific crimes have occurred to students attending Columbia. That said, I have never felt in danger walking around Livingston in the night.

Lol. I don't know why this made me laugh.

In terms of security issue, if you do go to Rutgers never, I repeat, NEVER walk around the College Avenue campus after 12am (specifically George Street) or else you might get mugged.

just don't hang around angry drunk people. and don't wander around george st after 12. you will get mugged, regardless if you're not alone.

I live on c/d. I've been out past midnight on all the campuses. I've felt more than safe.

I find it terrible how even in a group of 3 or 4 people, some guy has the nerve to come up to you at gun/knife point asking for money.

Wasn't there an incident a week or two prior to the start of school where 3 guys got attacked on George Street? I remember receiving an email about that.

a lot of stuff happens around George Street (College Avenue) but mostly after 1 AM. There was even a mugging at the Hurtado Health Center at 3AM once.

During the day there is no issues really. Though the train station is also a fishy spot, I've gone there 4-5 times this semester and everytime I go I'm pestered by some people asking for money or a smoke, not the most comfortable feeling

It must be what time you go then. I visit home almost every other day on the train (home sickness) and I've never had a problem with someone asking for money or anything like that.

usually at at 7PM and I use the main entrance rather than those steps on George Street. I don't mind it too much, but I can see how some people might be turned off by it

Rutgers is fine when it comes to security in my opinion.

I work for res life signing people in at the front of all the dorms... you can't get in without an ID wednesday-saturday from 11-3. Granted, some people doing my job slack but for the most part I'd say the dorms are safe. I only have experience being around college ave at night, but I've always felt safe walking from the SAC back to the quad. There are always people smoking hookah outside and for me, as long as there's someone around to hear me yell if I get in trouble I feel pretty okay.

As for not walking around George St. past midnight.... eh, I don't know. I've walked from the quad on college ave down to the stress factory which is off george street past midnight, and nobody has given me any trouble. It's just a bunch of drunk twentysomethings. I've also walked down hamilton street at three am ish (not by myself, and only because I was getting off work) and while I have seen people passed out on the sidewalk I've never felt threatened.

Scary things DO happen, and you should protect yourself, but I think that it's incredibly trumped up. People take the bad things and magnify them times a hundred- if you think about how many students go to rutgers and then think about the number of them that have experienced crime, it seems trivial.

oh geez. I know the stats might seem daunting but take it from me and everyone else on this board: rutgers is safe.

I have not been harassed by homeless people and I have walked from douglass to college ave and back to dodge the buses numerous times, alone. There have been sketchy characters along the way, but I was sure to distance myself from them. I've been out and about at 2 am on college ave and I have not been pickpocketed or mugged, but I was with people.

yes, new brunswick can be shady in some areas, but other college towns and campuses can be much, much worse. I'm not saying that things don't happen at rutgers; I'm just saying that things can happen just about anywhere.
