I’m matriculating as a freshman this fall and I plan on bring a lot of high tech equipment to my dorm room. I was wondering how secure or safe the dorm atmospheres are: am I fine when I leave my room with my door unlocked/open or do I have to lock and nail down my valuable stuff :)?

i'm also gonna be a freshman and dont really kno anything, but i'm just gonna say what sounds like common sense, lol. have a room safe to put ure most valuable possessions in, stuff that you dont need to use every second. it just makes sense. i think things are pretty safe there, but of course there probably is that rare theivery. also i heard advice somewhere else to keep ure ID separate from a chain of keys so that u kno if u lose the keys or someone steals them, they dont also have ure ID card to use, and just so that ull still have an ID if that happens. i dont think anyone is gonna try and get out of a dorm with a TV or a laptop, considering i feel like someone in the dorm would notice. yea, thats my schpeel

who loves to give insight when he doesn't have any, andyman does

and who loves to randomly put down people on internet forums because he has nothing better to do, lord jeff of course

A lot of people leave their doors unlocked and don't lose anything, but there are rare cases of laptop theft that might make one consider locking their doors just for safety (my roommate and I always locked the door). It can't really hurt to lock your door, although Amherst is probably one of the safest campuses in the country.

that's good to hear :)

You should definitely lock your door when you're out, but no need to be really paranoid.

Alot of people don't lock their doors, but you should definitely lock your laptop to your desk and not leave valuables in plain sight, just as a standard precaution.

There were a couple cases of people walking into dorms and taking laptops. I imagine it wouldn't be particularly difficult, and the profit margin is good. I'd say just lock and nail everything down and have your roommate do the same. If he doesn't, steal his laptop.
