Ok I was just curious about a few issues. First off, I know for sure the the dorm hall has a keyed entry and the entrance to the suite needs a key...but will my own individual room require a key? I really hope this is the case. I really don't want to have to buy a laptop so I've been planning on taking my old Dell Dimension E521. besides this I also have a 32" HDTV, an xbox360 and at least $700 worth of 360 games. Is taking that much stuff to school dangerous and do you suggest against it? Also, I wouldn't mind putting the TV in the living room to share with my roomate but would that work out?

Are you really going to college? I hope not.

It is unlikely but possible your individual room will have a key. Most don’t within a suite, but I know on my campus there is one really paranoid style building that has everything keyed. I know people here that have equivalently expensive stuff, and haven’t heard that it’s been stolen. Most roommates will not steal your stuff, and it is quite paranoid to think so. Remember, the horror stories are not the majority. Talk to your roommate about the TV, but I can’t see why you offering over free TV usage would be a problem… But maybe you don’t really need the games…it is perhaps better to socialize than play games.

I don’t recommend putting your xbox/and games in the living room area of a suite for all of your suitemates to use. It’ll get abused and broken in no time. If you insist on bringing an xbox, keep it in your room.

You are not going on a vacation, you are going to college. Do not bring those tiems.

ok no need to be an @$$hole. My dell is to do my papers/homework on. most college students take laptops correct? I have a perfectly good old desktop at home that I’m willing to drag up there but it will always be in my room, hence easier to steal…where as a laptop would always be where I am just about. And just because I bring an xbox doesnt mean I wont socialize or even do school work. Hell, everything I have are social type games anyways. and who doesnt want to watch streaming netflix videos on an HD, 32" screen? I bought it, I’m taking it. It doesn’t mean I’m gonna be on it all the time, I just want to be comfortable. Besides, theres not too much to do in statesboro.

oh and btw $700 in games? thats 8 games, one being dj hero the other guitar hero…idiot…so any real advice would be appreciated.

better safe than sorry. Always assume the worst.

well If you’re really worried I’m sure you could get a cable lock for your 360 and TV.

or you could just trust the people you’ll be living with for a year.

Lol, Georgia Southern, yep you’re going to need those games for sure…

It depends on the suite, but if it’s pretty small (say, 8 or fewer) it shouldn’t be a problem. People who share a suite with you pretty much won’t steal your stuff (also it’d be pretty blatant and easy to detect). Also video games can be a good way to socialize with people, or just let off some stress.

haha, yep too true Matt. But see, I’m not worried about my room mate/room mates at all…I’ve heard rumors of doors getting kicked down during the winter/spring breaks and to have to pack that stuff up all the time…

and how do you know about GSU?

There are some suites, at my school at least, that have individual locks on the doors inside.

Also be careful about drunk suitemate friends if you plan to leave your games out in a shared area. Might be a good idea to see what kind of drunks they are before you agree to leave them alone for the night with your guitar hero. Some drunks are Really rough with controllers (unintentionally.)

And I don’t see anything wrong with bringing video games as long as you don’t intend to live on them. They’re great for social. I brought my wii and many games (including two guitars for rock band.) I don’t play them all but it’s nice to have options.

I brought my 32’ HDTV and 360 along with a few games and my laptop which costs around $1,200 to school. Just make sure your room is locked. As everyone else said, keep them in your room instead of the common room. But you have to remember that it may be dangerous to leave them during long breaks. Personally, I left my stuff in my room during Winter Break and knew that maintenance people would be coming to our rooms to make sure everything in the room was fine. I came back to seeing no damage or stolen items. This really is your own decision since you never know if it will be stolen or not.

yeah sounds like you’re already living in my situation. What school all you going to now and what are the housing arrangements? Suite, apartment, etc?

I go to Johnson & Wales in Providence, RI. I currently live in a regular double with my own bathroom. There are suites available in my same building also. I do know a lot of other kids who have huge LCD’s also. I saw a kid bring in if I remember correctly a 46’ HDTV. I thought it was ■■■■■■■■ to bring a TV that big. Might as well just get another TV at a cheap price like me. Just got a cheap Insignia 32’ 720p for school since you don’t need a 1080p if only 4 HD channels are offered in the dorm. Also, 720p is good enough for the 360 imho with the HDMI cable.

No need to be a dick.

The suites at my school with individual rooms all have locks; I see no reason for them not to, for privacy. You might be able to call your Res Life at your school and ask.

Also, I see no problem with bringing your games, whatsoever. They can be good for socializing, and if you have downtime they’re a nice way to take it up if your friends are busy. Just be warned: it IS a possibility that they may get stolen.

Don’t mean to bump, but figured I’d add my own opinion.

Not sure how the suites are at your school, but here, it is two two-bedroom rooms, connected by a two-door’d bathroom. Each bedroom has a door to the hall. The only issue that arises is that sometimes my suitemates do not lock their door, so technically somebody can come in through their door and then raid my room, though it has not happened, and I don’t see it happening. It is not a huge issue, and they’re usually good about it, but just something to think about.

I myself have a 32" HDTV, an Xbox 360, and a dozen games in my dorm room. There’s nothing wrong with it, and I don’t think it is something you need to worry greatly about. I think the stories/possibility of dorm room break-ins are way exaggerated, and it isn’t nearly as common as you think.

All the dorms here on campus are locked down over breaks, so nobody can even get into the buildings to kick down doors. You also have to swipe your student ID to get into the building, and then again to either get into the elevators or the stairwell. Then there’s the lock on your door. Plus countless cameras in the lobby and hallways.

As long as you lock your door, you’ll be fine.
