What do college students usually do when it comes to protecting money, laptops and other personal items. I mean think about it, we're not going to be in our rooms 24/7 (generally speaking) and we don't know who our roommates are bringing to our rooms, heck, for that matter we don't even know our roommates too well. So how do we go about making sure personal items are secure and not stolen, etc?

Would you steal from your roommate because you don’t know them? I don’t know of anyone whose roommate stole anything other than food.

I’m pretty sure that my dorm has a lockable cabinet. I do plan on utilizing a lockable cabinet if it is offered. I’m bringing a couple valuable things (a DSLR being the most precious to me) and I’m not really afraid of my roommate stealing them (because where would she put them? I’m in the same room as her!) but I did get this totally sketch question on my Formspring last night that said:

How cryptic? I don’t know what to say to that comment, so I’m just going to keep a keen eye, I guess, but make my own decisions on her. From what I’ve noticed, she is nothing of the sort, but whatever; the message I got may be reason enough to just watch out.

If you are concerned about leaving your laptop unattended, get a cable lock and attach it to something stationary in your room.

Thanks for posts guys. I’m not trying to be paranoid/pessmisitic but you can never really know. People could appear to be one way but really be the total opposite of what you expect. I just want to have all bases covered. Again, thanks for the posts guys. I <3 CC :D

I have been generally trusting of my roommates with my laptop. However, I have noticed little things like DVDs go missing…which could have been my roommate’s friends or just me losing them…

I know though that at XU, campus police is pretty good about helping to track down stolen items, although most stolen items were stolen because people were idiots and left their doors unlocked.

I never had a roommate. I would be paranoid about them stealing my stuff since almost everything I own is very high quality expensive stuff. But being overly paranoid might cause some social issues with your roommate since if it is obvious your roommate will obviously know you do not trust him or her.

This is my main concern. I have 4 other roommates. What if one is careless and leaves the door unlocked while I’m in class or at lunch or during a club meeting. These are the things that worry me.

I know on our doors there was a way to keep it on “locked” at all times, even after unlocking…you had to unlock by turning the key a certain direction. Not sure if this is a feature on the doors in your dorm, but it would be worth investigating! =)

XU2011! You’re awesome. You just sparked my memory. I remember when I visisted that you needed to swipe your card to get in the room – the only way the door can be unlocked is if you put something in front of the door to keep it open. Okay, this sort eases my worrying now. Haha

Lol yeah, XU is going to the whole card swipe system too. Also, there should be some sort of roommate agreement form you’re required to complete by reslife. That should help some with the knowing boundaries and what you can and can’t use of mine issues.

Move to a 1br apartment.
