Seeking advice on my foreign language requirement

Hello, I apologize if I posted this in the wrong thread. I am needing some advice on my foreign language req. I currently attend FSCJ (my local cc). I am wrapping up my AA degree and the prereqs to major in Biology when I transfer out. I am aiming to transfer in Fall 2020, to hopefully UF. I got my GED, so I have to take two semesters of a foreign language. I enrolled in Spanish I this semester and to sum it up, I dislike it, and i’m not doing as good as I thought I could in this class. I am now fearing that this class will drop my GPA if I don’t get an A. I currently have a 4.0 and really want to maintain it. I had a classmate suggest I drop it and take ASL I and II instead. This will give me a W on my transcript (my first one). I really don’t know what to do. Should I stay in Spanish and try my best to hopefully get an A when it most likely is gonna be a B or even C? Would it look like I give up easily for switching languages? Is the W gonna hurt me? Would switching to ASL next semester look bad for UF admissions? I really need some advice. Thank you in advance.

If you are going to earn a B or a C - that will meet the admissions requirement and help you meet the CLAS graduation requirement. You can always check with the registrar’s office there to see if you can switch to pass/fail which would not affect your GPA. You still have Spanish 2 to go if you are hating it for more than just earning a B/C then a W would also not hurt your admission chances but only you know how ASL would work for you.

I think that the secret to learning a second language is to use it.

Watch TV shows in Spanish, even if you have to watch kids shows. News and sports have the advantage that you will have some idea what is going on. At first it will be hard to understand much, but you will pick up more over time.

Getting a tutor can also help a lot. You pretty much need anyone who can speak Spanish as a tutor. A bilingual friend or colleague would work fine. If you just sit down for an hour or two each week and attempt to speak Spanish that would help significantly.
