I want to major in architecture and my goal is to attend UT Austin. But I do not have the grades. So I have been thinking I will participate in the CAP program(which ensures automatic admission into UT Austin after spending a year at another UT school as long as you meet certain requirements) , and UT Arlington looks to be where I will probably end up.

The only problem is you are only guaranteed certain majors, architecture is not one of them. This makes everything seemingly more difficult but getting into the school of architecture still seems possible. Until I read the UT Arlington CAP FAQ- University Advising Center - UT Arlington: What are some CAP FAQs?

Which makes it look like architecture is absolutley NOT an option.
The UT Austin web site makes it seem possible to major in architecture after CAP, its just not guaranteed, UT Arlington makes it seem as though there is no way in hell you will ever be able to do so. Who is being more misleading? Is internal transfer possible or will it just end up being a huge waste of time? UT Arlington has a good architecture program but I really do not want to spend the next four years of my life in Arlington, or too close to home.

Advice? (sorry if this is in the wrong forum)

Contact UT, but it seems like it is going to be very tough to get into the UT Austin Architecture program as a transfer. I have the highest regard for the quality of the UTA architecture program, but from what I have seen the campus life leaves a lot to be desired compared to a UT Austin. I don’t really understand the CAP program. Why spend 25% of your college life in a school you don’t like so you then have the opportunity to attend a big state school? Now if Stanford had a CAP program…

There are some other good architecture schools in the area. OSU has a very good program and they are generous with the financial aid. KU and KSU are also good choices.

Rick, my son has been accepted into UTA. We are OOS and he didn’t apply to UT Austin. We are visiting at the end of the month. Is there no campus life at UTA at all, or just not in comparison to UT Austin? He seems to have been accepted into architecture, btw.

No, there is a campus life, just not in comparison to UT Austin. UTA had been a commuter school that has been transitioning to a more resident campus. There have been major improvements, but it is in catch-up mode. It is however a very good architecture school and some of the very best architects in my office have come from there.
