seeking general info

Anyone out there have any info on this University? D is considering Southwestern. Wondering about dorms, campus life, classes, professors etc. We've received the view books and looked through the info. Now we're looking for inside knowledge. Particularly for an undecided undergraduate who likes writing and literature. Thanks.

I'm a Southwestern graduate (mumblesomething years ago), but visited with my daughter in March. Most students live on campus all 4 years - half of the dorms have been built within the last ten years. While there's not much to do in Georgetown (that hasn't changed), Austin is close by for entertainment. On campus, Greek life is fairly big but not mandatory. The classes are small, and the students develop close relationships with the professors - my daughter was impressed to see a professor (one whom I had had way back when!) deep in discussion with students at the campus coffee house. We had lunch in the commons, and the food was decent, with quite a few choices. I can't speak to the quality of the English department - the more popular majors are the sciences (pre-med) and communications. Merit aid and other financial aid is quite generous!

Take a tour and see what you think - maybe you'll get the same tourguide my daughter had - a dead ringer for Brendan Fraser!

fireflyscout, Brendan Fraser!! I am so there. I'll drag my daughter for a tour whether she likes it or not. LOL. I loved George of the Jungle. And not for it's witty screenplay.

Thanks for your take. I guess you liked Southwestern well enough if your daughter is also attending. I don't know about Greek life for my D but who knows, she could surprise me.

I like the fact that they tell you up front exactly how much you will get according to grades, test scores, etc. That was one of the first things that made me take a second look. It has a good reputation from what we've researched and we do plan to go take a look. I'll ask for Brendan.

We just visited the campus, so if any one has questions about it let me know. I liked the campus but I think my d would prefer something a lttle bigger.

The dorms were the nicest we'd seen so far. And the students all seemed to be smiling and friendly. It gave me a favorable impression.

This is for you, Curmudgeon, and anyone else who asked me elsewhere to write a little more about our visit to Southwestern last weekend.

Georgetown is about 30 minutes north of Austin. We had light traffic and actually got to the campus 20 minutes after we left the UTAustin campus.

The campus is small and pretty, with rolling green hills as a backdrop and a nice golf course adjacent. The grounds were very well kept. The eating and meeting facilities were all aesthetically pleasing with fireplaces in many of the rooms.

The dorms we were shown looked new. They were larger than any others we've seen elsewhere and they have included maid service (I think 2 times a week). Definitely the nicest bathrooms of any dorm we looked at.

The gym and indoor pool were also nice.

The emphasis here seems to be on getting small class sizes with individual attention. They are very upfront about the merit aid you are eligible for and even list the amounts on their website. The students (as mentioned above) seemed all to be smiling and happy to see us. The school is affiliated with the Methodist church.

About 50% of the students pursue study abroad.

I have read very good things about this school. I believe that it is making a name for itself.

My overall impression was of a small, cozy, liberal arts college, very near Austin.

My son goes there and loves it. I've talked to several parents of kids who go there and have never heard a bad word about it.
