seeking srtrong D-3 track program

D is increasingly concerned about juggling D-1 sports and academics, and is now searching for strong D-3 track programs. Her best events are high jump and 100m, she is weaker, but solid in long jump and shot put.

Strongest subj: math (arch or math/art as possible major)
Weakest subj: foreign lang (would pref college w/ no lang req)
GPA: 3.2

Thanks.

Check out Williams. Very strong math, very strong art, very strong D-3 track.

For strong DIII women's track programs, focus on the top end of this list:

Looks like Wartburg (ranked #3 in the poll) won the NCAA outdoor championship!

From personal contact with schools Willamette, Claremont-McKenna and Trinity University all have outstanding programs and wonderful coaches. E-mail me with any specifics. These are girl's teams.

My S was on a Div 3 team at Pomona last year, it can be time consumming as well but is a lot of fun. You need to set limits however as some teams will practice 7 days per week and at 10 miles a day that can lead to serious injuries. The student has to listen to their bodies which can be hard to do when caught up in the excitement and wins.

Thanks, but there's no way D is getting into Pomona or Williams (or worse still, she'd be admitted and flunk out).

Any suggestions more in the Hamilton. Scripps range academically? (Or even in the Trinity (CT), Conn College range.)

At the D-3 level, wouldn't she be better off with a weaker track program (but with a good coach) so that the athletics could really act as hook?

I agree with Mini, though if your D is a strong D1 candidate that would be a hook at most D3 schools.

Of course, you don't want to pick schools where she would struggle academically.

Coureur's list is great.

Hamilton/Trinity/Scripps are actually pretty tough schools. In the academic range of the schools you mentioned, or maybe slightly easier from Coureur's list:

Denison
Macalester
Muhlenberg
Allegheny
Dickinson
St Lawrence

I don't know anything about their coach, but I am really high on Redlands, and it sounds like it might be a good academic match for your D. I know a young man who was seriously considering it for soccer.

Redlands also has a great coach. My D met with them. They drive every weekend to the ocean and sounds like a tight knit group of girls. They do a lot with the guys team as well. Redlands is great for merit money as well. It was a consideration on my D's list. Lewis and Clark also has great coaches who are trying very hard to build up their team and are strongly recruiting.

NYC,

Check out Wheaton:

<a href="http://www.wheatoncollege.edu/Athletics/outdoortrackw/Coach.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.wheatoncollege.edu/Athletics/outdoortrackw/Coach.html</a></p>

There are 1000+ DIII programs ... I would suggest doing a traditional college search focused on academics and location (region, size, city/rural) and that initial search should yleld some interesting candidates (and athletic conferences) to check out. Then I'd suggest going to those schools websites and contacting the track coaches .. if your child was thinking about DI almost all DIII programs will be very happy to hear from your family!. I would also suggest checking out ... <a href="http://www.ncaa.org%5B/url%5D">www.ncaa.org</a> ... to understand the rules of DIII recruiting. PS - a lot of DIII programs do not do a lot of proactive recruiting byond their immediate georaphic area (people and budget limitations) ... but will become very interested and active when they become aware of good candidates.

PPS - the college websites will often list the college and HS performace of their track & field people ... which helps judge how good a fit the t&f program might be.

Scripps shares teams with CMC and their coach is wonderful, the school is getting more and more competitive to get into however as the Claremonts increase in popularity. It is a great program however. Their coach works with both the girls and guys team and is well liked by the students(and parents).

here's another list to help you shop.......the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics scores D1 & D3 athletic programs (amongst others) across seasons & sports, culminating in award of the "Director's Cup" (formerly "Sears Cup") in each division.

The spring 05 scores won't be in until 6/17, so here's a link to last year's D3 scores:

<a href="http://www.collegesports.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/nacda/sports/directorscup/auto_pdf/D3FinalStandings%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegesports.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/nacda/sports/directorscup/auto_pdf/D3FinalStandings</a></p>

For women's track & field, the 04-05 high scorers were:
Calvin/90
Wartburg/80
New Jersey/75
Amherst/72.75
Carthage/72.75
Williams/69.75
Wisc-Lacrosse/67.5
Loras/64.5
St Thomas/63
Central/61.5
Gustavus Adolphus/57.75
Whitworth/56
Nebraska Wesleyan/55
Tufts/52
Trinity-Tx/49
Willamette/46
and so forth....

You'll have to check the web site out to understand their scoring system. Plenty of academic diversity in this list.

Coureur and Papa -

Great lists! D will be happy to see that Case (#66) and SUNY Geneseo (#35) are on the list.

Mini, SBmon and MomofWildChild -

D fears a weak program will have weak coaching. I know that some teams w/ good records have weak coaching (student from Kenyon reproted that sch has talented athletes, so team has strong showing at meets despite weak coaching), but I can't think of a single school w/ a poor record and good coaching. Also, I think D times & jumps are strong enough to be a hook at any D3 school. (D consist jumps 5'2; best jump at meet is 5'4 - good enough for some D1 top ten or season's best lists.)

Thanks again.

I will have D check out Redlands, Dickinson and Muhlenberg; Scripps (CMC), Trinity U and Dennison are already on her list (but Allegheny-1%black and St. Lawr. - 2%black didn't make the cut).

errata to my post above.....that list was for last year, '03-'04; this year's results will be finalized in a few days & should be on the web site soon.

nyc, by the way, I went to Denison as a younger man & it was (& still is from what I hear) a beautiful place w/ decent academics. Good luck in your search...Papa C

nyc,

Looking at the list that was posted by coureur and the types of schools that SBMom suggested along with your response, might i suggest Ithaca College and Ohio Wesleyan University? Have you considered these two schools?

My youngest runs track in a competitive D-III program. It does take time management (normal day is an hour to an hour and a half in the pool in the morning before classes and a couple of hours on the track or in the weight room in the afternoons). That's pretty much a year long commitment as they start up a couple of weeks into the Fall semester. They also tend to miss Friday classes in season when they have away meets.

So, the time is significant, but not prohibitive. Offspring had an outstanding academic first year and, in addition to the track team, participated in a number of other demanding ECs. The team also provided a social center that, although there was some partying involved, was a nice alternative to the near constant insanity of the first year dorms.
