Seeking YOUR advice!

I realize this is probably not the best time to post this, seeing as everyone's biting their nails, waiting for admission announcements, etc etc... but I just HAD to ask.
I'm currently a junior student in a faraway pacific island (ie. New Zealand), attending a rather renowned private school, into my first year of IB. For the past 2 years I've been ranked 1/180 (180 being our year group), have had and still have various (over)committments, etc. However... there is a very tight (and deadly) competition between the ten or so elites of our year group and I'm concerned that, should I not stay 1/180 for the rest of my secondary school career I would be showing a decline in my achievements and be, well... rejected from every single school possible!wails My aims are high (ie. the ivies), seeing as my brother is in Duke and he tells me all about the weird and wonderful things he does at school...
Also, I've chosen to anticipate maths SL instead of taking it HL... would that have any disadvantages?

...thanks for reading this and replying (nudge nudge) despite your busy lives and advanced state of nervousness:)

Why Math SL? All that work and no IB credit????

Valedictorian status only goes so far; Duke rejected 57%. It helps, but plenty of people get in who aren't ranked #1. The other factors (extracurriculars, interests, personality, etc.) are becoming increasingly important.,
