seems like a stupid question

even to me, but hey, there are no such things as stupid questions when you don't know the answers, right?

you know the part of the supplement that asks you to list books/adjectives - would it make sense to put in a brief (1-2 sentence) explanation for each item?

I suppose you can; I doubt it’s necessary. It’s really not a make or break part of your application…

sure, i did that and got in

cool that you’re starting on apps already btw

I just listed books, and I got in also, so it’s not necessary. If you feel that it enhances you application, you apparently can.

I wrote a sentence on each book I think. I really don’t think it matters as long as you don’t go overboard and try to write a paragraph on each since thats obviously not what they want.

I just listed books and their authors. For the adjectives, I just listed the words. Okay, I used proper sentences, but that was about it. If there’s an insider reference to the word/adjective you are using, then it might be better if you list the reason.

I would just list them. Explaining is probably a waste of time.

When it says 350 characters or less, does it literally mean characters, or should that read words? 350 characters is like 3 sentences… maybe 4-5 without spaces…

Yes, it Literally means characters, you can’t submit the application if it’s over the character limit.

I’m reviving this because I’d like more opinions…
Did you just list books and words, or did you explain your choices for either of the prompts?

You can really do it either way. The books/adjectives will not likely be the thing that makes or breaks an application.

You should just list the words and books, unless it’s something relatively unknown, in which case a short explanation would be fine. If you write too much, it will get cut off when your application is submitted.

I’m gonna have to disagree, it was recommended to me that I write a little explanation about each thing but certainly you must make sure it doesn’t exceed the amount of characters allowed

Recommended to you by whom?

My son just listed the title/author. Except he put a one-sentence explanation for the children’s picture book. He was accepted.

When we watched a Caltech admissions thing online several weeks ago, the presenter there said that just a list was ok.

Ah alright, thanks for the opinions.
I think I’ll just list the adjectives, but explain the books. Compromise ahaha.

@ lizardfire… it was someone interal, PM me if you’re interested in knowing

I put a sentence for each, and was accepted.

Contest for most ridiculous application???

one of my adjectives was “dungeon master”

Must’ve been those [members of a certain House]! Sounds like something they’ll do (they’re all fine houses). :D.

The only one the I put an explanation in for is Flatland because I figured that Flatland would come up in a lot of applications.
