It is probably a bigger deal for the OP, who is an out-of-state student who is on a very limited budget (no contribution from high income parents) who is considering FAMU for the full ride scholarship for his stats (assuming that the money has not run out – first come first served). A Florida resident could get the required summer session done at in-state tuition, possibly at a Florida public university local to his/her home town (so at reduced living expenses living with parents). The OP would have to pay out-of-state tuition and living expenses to complete the required summer session. In addition, the required summer courses reduce the amount of time available to work to earn money.
It is probably best to do the summer session early (pre-frosh if allowed or between frosh and soph years), since summer sessions are likely to have reduced availability of more specialized upper level courses, and the later summers are the ones where the student is more likely to get a paid internship or summer job.
