Wow–have never stayed at the Fairmont–lovely hotel. Maybe next time!
Nevermind what I said upthread. I DID see The Eagle Huntress tonight! I guess I can’t read the showtimes very well!
I enjoyed it. An easy low-key girl-power movie with lots of beautiful scenery. Not at all a serious information-packed documentary. It was just what I needed.
@MYOS1634 Mentioned it last month, watched Captain Fantastic (Redbox or pay per view). We really enjoyed it.
Just popping in to say everyone needs to get out right now and see La La Land.
@rebeccar - it’s going to be our Christmas day movie! Many years we struggle to find something all four of us can agree on, and someone is compromising. This year all four of us are looking forward to it. No other movie title even came up.
@MYOS1634, I missed your post about the Mongolian film. You’ve got stamina. I rarely bail out of a movie, but I’m not sure I would have made it through that one. Three hours is tough to get through.
Has anyone seen Nocturnal Animals? I don’t know anything about it, but it looks like it got decent reviews, and I liked A Single Man.
Loving. Excellent.
H and I went to see Allied (Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard). It was just OK.
We saw Arrival a couple weeks ago, and I enjoyed it enough to read the short story on which it is based. The story is “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang. Somehow I’d not noticed him as a writer. He’s only published 15 stories, none of them novels. But, he’s won 4 Hugo Awards and 4 Nebulas with those 15 stories.
There were interesting differences between the movie and the story, and I liked both. The story had more emphasis on questions of free will vs knowledge of the future and differences between human and alien understanding of physics. The movie added visual interest as far as the spaceships and alien anatomy and the international and media intrigue.
We’ve also watched and enjoyed Fantastic Beasts and Rouge One recently. We are looking forward to “Hidden Figures” about the African-American female mathematicians who helped put John Glenn in orbit. Opens Jan. 6.
I liked Doctor Strange and Fantastic Beasts too.
I’d like to see LaLa Land, but none of the boys are interested. We’ll probably go see Rogue One.
I’d like to see Hidden Figures. I’m figuring one way of getting Hollywood to be less Oscars so White is to actually make a point of seeing the good movies with stars who are people of color. I’d also like to see Fences.
I loved Manchester By the Sea although I found it devastatingly sad. I didn’t like La La Land at all.
Ams5796, say more. I found Manchester just so depressing, I was ready to walk out. I have tix for LaLa Land for Xmas day.
I caught up to Loving this past weekend. DH and I really enjoyed it as did the friends that we went with. It is well made, beautifully acted although it is a bit slow. I think that it might be intentionally slow… gets you into the spirit of slowly the appeals process moves and the wheels of justice. It did make me want to know more about the couple and the case so that is a good thing. I had seen the November issue of either Vogue or Vanity Fair in which they are in a pretty spectacular photo shoot with very different looks than they are portrayed in the film.
We saw Loving as a family last night. As a biracial family, we are well aware of this couple, the court case and when D was little, she always believed that the Lovings were personally responsible for her parents being married. We saw it in a very small theater with living room seating and I can’t recall a movie where the audience was that silent throughout the entire movie. Even though I knew the outcome, I was practically holding my breath for the Supreme Court ruling. We also saw a preview for Hidden Numbers, and I’m ashamed to say that I knew nothing about this story until I saw my first preview for it some time ago. It looks very promising.
@bookmom I almost agree about Manchester. When I came out of the theater I thought there would be no way I could recommend that movie to anyone. Now, I recommend it with caution. I’ve had time to digest and appreciate it. I thought Casey Affleck’s performance was stunning and for that reason I would recommend it. I also live north of Boston so I loved the setting of the movie. I have to say I found La La Land cringe worthy. Maybe I should have known that I don’t like musicals. I remember seeing the preview for the movie months ago and thinking there was no way I would see that movie. But, then after all the great buzz I got sucked in. I should have stayed with my first impression. There was no story to it and while Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were impressive I had no interest in their characters. Maybe there wasn’t supposed to be any depth to it. Or, maybe I missed something. I look forward to hearing what you think.
I’m looking forward to seeing Hidden Figures!
As an aside, speaking of the Boston area and Casey Affleck, did you catch the SNL skit this past weekend, @ams5796? As someone from the area, I found it pretty spot on. I do like Casey Affleck’s acting.

Looking forward to seeing Manchester by the Sea.
@doschicos I loved the Casey Affleck Dunkin Donuts skit! I feel like I know that guy. I think he’s a terrific actor. It will be interesting to see how far he’ll go this awards season. His past may be a problem.
I think anyone who’s grown up in and around Boston, knows someone like that Dunkins’ guy. I wonder if the skit connected with folks not from New England?
