Saw Shape of Water and 3 Billboards this weekend. Really enjoyed both for very different reasons. I thought the overall cinematography of Shape of Water was beautiful and it had an old time movie feel. Loved Richard Jenkins in it. I think I preferred 3 Billboards because of the performances (Frances, Sam and Woody all were excellent) and I laughed out loud several times (even if I felt a little guilty for doing so because of the subject matter - but so many of the scenes and reactions were so absurd and spot-on at the same time). But I think my favorite of the Oscar films has to be Lady Bird. Just loved the mother/daughter relationship and for those of us on CC with kids going to college soon, it was very relevant.
Just saw Lady Bird. I enjoyed it. A woman was sniffling/crying as the credits rolled. I think it could be the type of movie one can relate to, depending on one’s mother/daughter relationships.
I wouldn’t put it above 3 Billboards, but would certainly recommend.
Timothee’s episode on L&O was Season 19 Episode 10 (2009). I didn’t see it but I’m on IMDb.com more than I should be! His high school girlfriend is Madonna’s daughter! A little trivia. Call Me By Your Name is the nominated movie I most want to see. The only movies I’ve seen that are Oscar noms Dunkirk and The Big Sick very good and Get Out unique/good.
^thanks for the info, 3sonsmom! I was thinking he was the young man who convinced his female classmates to kill but that might have been another young man with a great head of hair.
Anyone eager to see the Sundance award winners? I thought The Tale would win, but Miseducation of Cameron Post sounds good, as does Burden. https://www.sundance.org/blogs/news/2018-film-festival-awards#/
Winchester
Helen Mirren was the best thing in this meh movie.
Lots of sneaking up and startling cast members.
Not on the level of Happy Death Day or It but Insidious 3.
Do not waste your money but if you have Movie Pass then it is 2 hours you can’t get back.
Maze Runner 3 was long but entertainingly tied up the trilogy without requiring one to watch the first two.
My husband and I are both middle age with no small kids, but we thoroughly enjoyed Paddington 2 today.
My fiance and I both totally cried at the end of Paddington 2. What an amazingly sweet and wholesome movie!
Also, LOVED The Shape of Water.
Disappointed in The Thread…
Enjoyed “Frances Ha” yesterday.
Saw Darkest hour. Great performance but all in all a bit disappointing compared to the hype. I wish they’d gone on a bit after that speech for instance. I think it’d be perfect seen alongside Dunkirk, since it’s the opposite in terms of cinematography but covers a bit if the same period.
Saw "Shape of Water’ last night and absolutely loved it. Thought it was so beautifully made and different. You do nee do suspend reality a bit but this might actually be the best picture of the year for me so far. If not it will still win many additional awards this season. Sally Hawkins performance is outstanding as are Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer. DH thought Michael Shannon should have been recognized as well.
If you like the Avett Brothers (and even if you don’t ) watch May It Last. Currently on HBO.

We finally saw “Shape of Water”, I liked it a lot. DH liked it less and less. He hated the dancing sequence (which he said was just like the unrealistic one at the Observatory in LaLa Land which he also hated.) I told him to think of it as a dream or metaphor, but he didn’t seem mollified. Some times he just so left brained@
@bookmama22 I think Michael Shannon has great performance in SoW too, but he is a bit type-casted in this role, wish he would have wider character-choices in the future, he is such a good actor.
@mathmom that dance sequence is a bit out of place. Wish it were not there. (I enjoyed the Lalaland version though. )
The 1978 movie Julia, about playwright Lillian Hellman helping her friend in the resistance in WWII, was on PBS Saturday night. I recorded it and watched it last night. It stars Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave. I remember loving it when it came out when I was in high school and even still own my old copy of Hellman’s book that contains it. Definitely worth revisiting.
And interesting that two of my favorite current TV shows also have Fonda and Redgrave, Grace and Frankie, and Call the Midwife.
I saw Miracle yesterday. It was close, but the USA hockey team won again.
Michael Shannon was really good in “Midnight Special” and in an older movie, “Take Shelter.”
The Shape of Water - It was OK. Little bit disappointed. I just couldn’t believe the romance between the two characters - especially the physical romance (you know what I mean). I wanted to see more buildup of their emotional connection. Also, Michael Shannon’s character was very two-dimensional.
Lady Bird - loved it!! Of course, because we are from west coast, my daughter had been wanting to go to east coast college, my husband lost his job while she was in high school, and D is a freshman at Barnard!! (and D and I enjoyed occasional Sunday open houses of gorgeous houses!!)
