The title is self-explanatory. I’m trying to decide which residential area I want to live in. What are the pros and cons of each?

Cool I know very basic facts about each…

Seguno - The best location out of all the housing. It’s right next to the ARC and it’s close to almost all departments. New dorms open this year! So that’s always a plus!

Cuarto- Is the “suite” style housing. Lots of room and your dorm mates are like a family (group of 8-10). But it is in the middle of no where. It’s located away from everything which makes the social life “limited” but not really. Bike to class and such.

Tercero- The new dorms opened up a year ago and it is very nice. Tercero and Segundo are very similar but I have been told by Davis students that the food @ Tercero is better than Segundo’s but Segundo’s location is better than Terceros. Tercero is near the agriculture area and on hot breezy days you can kind of smell the cows. Not so much where students evacuate or complain about it.

I’m putting down … Segundo, Tercero then Cuarto. If you’re lucky you’ll get one of the new dorms!

I lived in Segundo as a freshman. Here’s my opinion:

Segundo
- close to the ARC, University Mall (Forever 21!, Subway, Trader Joes, Rite Aid, Grad)
- close to Russell (fraternities + parties)
- isn’t a lot of it under construction?
- on Saturday/Sunday mornings, you have to wake up to the music/loudspeakers from the softball fields.

Tercero
- most of the freshmen live here, I believe
- has some really sweet new dorms that are pretty nice!
- huge DC and Trudy’s! way better than the Junction
- next to the cows so it’s kind of smelly on some days
- closest to Arboretum so if you have bad allergies I don’t recommend it

Cuarto
- has a pool! woot
- near UMall and Trader Joes
- has access to B and C bus lines that will take you straight to campus (makes up for the fact that it’s a little farther from main campus than Segundo or Tercero)
- not the best DC
- some people don’t like the suite-style dorms
- can feel a little secluded

Do you know anything about the new Segundo dorms opening up this fall? How is it ?

I’m not sure what dorms these would be referring to. I know that some of the dorms like Ryerson, Bixby, Gilmore, and Malcolm are under construction, but those have been around for a while (I myself lived in one of those). Alder, Miller, and Thompson are relatively new and are pretty nice as well. Regan isn’t my favorite–I’ve visited and I’m not a fan of how tiny/cramped it can be. Also, they have tile floors in the bedrooms like some Tercero letter buildings (As opposed to carpet in the bedrooms like the newer Tercero buildings and like the other Segundo buildings).

So many names! When do we sign up for housing? B/c if it’s later than July 24th, I can go take a look during my orientation. How many people do you share the bathroom with for Seguno and Tercero?

Haha I know, it can be confusing at first but you’ll learn them fast! I’m not sure about the deadline to rank your housing preferences/pick your meal plan but if I recall it’s sometime in June so you should get on that soon.

I’m pretty sure that the bathrooms in Segundo (Alder, Miller, Thompson, Ryerson/Malcom/Bixby/Gilmore, Regan) are all communal, since all of the rooms are doubles (some triples too?)…actually on second thought I think all the Tercero bathrooms are the same way.

I think Cuarto is the only dorm where you have a suite and so you have one bathroom per suite.

ahhh! my brain hurts just thinking of all of this! so many decisions!
thanks for the info!

whens housing due?
anyone else have anymore info on housing? I don’t know anything about UC Davis dorm so I don’t know what to put

edit: whats DC?
edit 2: Hows the food in all of them? Which is more vegetarian friendly?

I heard Tercero has the best food!

FutureEEMajor: I’m not sure when housing’s due, you should probably contact Student Housing or look around on your MyAdmissions page.

DC= Dining Commons. You’ll learn that UCD is obsessed with abbreviations (DC, ARC, MU, SAC, SJA, etc…)

The food is pretty standard across all of the dining halls. Segundo and Tercero have larger DCs than Cuarto does, and they’re also closer to campus. All the DCs have lots of vegetarian and vegan-friendly options. Not sure about the other two, but I know that Segundo has a fridge full of gluten-free desserts. The DC likes to have themed food nights once or twice each week (ex: Farm to Table, Sushi, Steak/Lobster, etc). I’ve visited friends at other schools and I’m so grateful for a DC with so many options!

@ Future: You can view the menu here: [Welcome, Dining Services, UC Davis](<a href=“Dining at UC Davis | UC Davis Student Housing and Dining Services”>Dining at UC Davis | UC Davis Student Housing and Dining Services)

From what I see, Cuarto has more vegetarian options, but all the DCs have vegetarian food. And DC stands for dining common.

Housing is due on June 10 for freshmen and July 1 for transfers.

BTW, how long does it take to bike from Cuarto to, say, Meyer Hall? Or if I want to take advantage of the bus system, which line is best to take?

Biking to campus from Cuarto can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on your speed, traffic that day, etc. Usually it’s not too bad. The nice thing is that you always have the option of taking Unitrans if the weather is bad (although it’s not the most luxurious ride seeing as everyone’s squished in the bus with their wet rain jackets and umbrellas).

The Unitrans B line goes to the MU, and I think the C line goes to the Silo. People just choose to take whichever line will take them closest to their class building. I think that Cuarto is the last stop on both of those lines before the MU/Silo, so it’s a pretty fast ride.
