Selcetion :)

I am an International student. I just got admitted to University of Michigan and I am psyched.

Here is my list with decisions :-
UIllinoi - Deferred , Major - Mechanical Engineering
UMichigan - Accepted , Major - Mechanical Engineering
Purude - Accepted , Major - Undecided Engineering
University of TExas - Austin - Applied , Major - Mechanical Engineering
UofT and Waterloo - I am in as my stats are above requirements for Indian students and that of people who have been accepted . I am wondering whether I should apply to these universities.

My criteria :-

1)Money - I have it covered . My parents want to send me to the best possible university.

2)Major - I am planning to do a minor with my major or a double major, But I do not know which of the universities would allow that . Mostly an engineering degree ( Mechanical engineering) with a possible - International relations or Economics or....

3)Jobs - I want the university to have the best job placements .

4)Quality of education - The best among the 5 mentioned above.

5)Campus size and weather - Size doesn't matter (that is why I applied to public universities). I currently in Dubai and I lived 4 years in Canada. So temperature ranging between -40 Degree Celsius and 50 Degree Celsius is manageable.

Criteria which is not so Important :-

1)Chicks - I don't want ugly nerds with the braces on. I want them hot and ready like buffalo wings :P (Ignore the lameness .. Basically a Very Co-ed environment) .. But can be compromised if the education is great.

2)Good Facilities - Top class equipment .. Good sports .. Good Transport .. Nice City/State .. and Good Dorm rooms .. Good parties and Finally Safe.

Help me out : )

"- I don’t want ugly nerds with the braces on. I want them hot and ready like buffalo wings "

I think your comment above will cause most parents here not to post with useful info.

And you are from India?

"Help me out : ) "

You omitted one important word - “please”. Please learn to use this word often, it does wonders.

(I think NSM and m.s addressed the other problem with your post).

Gosh, I hope UT turns you down.

B**

I am really sorry. I did not mean to offend anyone. Seriously ! …

mimimomx3 - Why so harsh ? .

Why can’t you people take a look at the rest of the post ? , rather than just attacking me ? . I am sorry and that’s all I can say … That is what a “:P” symbol indicates. What do you expect ?? … I am 16

and I ask you again to help me out … PLEASE

Most women don’t like to be looked at as a piece of meat.

Come on … It was a joke and I said I am sorry …

Again all I meant was this :-

B**

Also … IF it is just too harsh I request a moderator to delete this post. That is all I can say .

You will be a very young college student if you are only 16 now.

Do you want one of us to tell you which of the colleges on your list is the best choice for you? I’m not even sure what you are asking.

If you want my opinion…Purdue has well regarded engineering programs. So does U Mich. You need to know that doing a minor with an engineering degree can be difficult at some places…not so at others. You need to contact the SCHOOLS to see what the deal is. My husband is an engineer. When he was an undergrad, his engineering program would not allow any minor/double majors because there simply wasn’t enough time to complete all the requirements. DD is an engineering major with a double major in biology…different school. YMMV.

Re: the rest of your post…I’ll excuse it because you are really the age of most 10th graders.

@thumper :- Thanks a lot for the reply. My parents too are worried about campus safety and also whether I would be able to take care of myself as I am still young (younger than most college students).

I do not have any favorites now (although UMichigan is where I am leaning towards)… I am looking for a fit … I guess all the above mentioned are my requirements … but then just ignore the Chicks part.

Thanks and sorry again.

I think UIllinoi, Purude, and TExas are all excellent schools.

You may be disappointed in your very co-ed environment. My dad was a very young college student, and he said it was death to his social life.

I think you can answer your own question easily by looking on line at the course offerings of the schools. Most schools post their course catalogs. It’s easy to see which departments have the greatest breadth and/or the greatest depth of course offerings.

Good luck.

It sounds like you’ll be at least a year younger than your classmates. when will you be 17? Many American boys are 19 or almost 19 when they start college because their parents delay-start them.

To the others…

What’s the deal when int’ls come to the US for school. They get an education visa, but what happens when they graduate? It sounds like many want to stay here and get jobs. Is that easy to do? I guess it might be easier for those with high-tech degrees, but how does that all work? At what point does the US say, “no,” to protect the jobs for Americans?

mom2collegekids : - I am an international with a Canadian permanent residence Visa.

Engineering field is special enough or at least has been heavily lobbied by a lot of high tech companies to open up the opportunities for foreign people with H1B visas. Many tens of thousands of slots every year, and amongst engineering professionals here in the US, it is been debated over and over again along with oversea outsourcing whether the practice is truly because there is a shortage of skilled engineers or is it a way to keep the salary of engineers down. Anyway, a recent foreign grad from a good US university just needs to find a company to hire/sponsor him/her, the H1B is fairly easy to get once that happens.
