Hey I was just wondering.... could some1 post some basic info about the dorms that can be selcted? I am international and dont know much about the housing and stuff.... ne help would be really appreciated! thnx....

Freshman Quad Housing:

AMR I / II Very traditional college housing. Each building is divided up into houses, which have separate doors, but there are no interior barriers between the houses. There are single and double rooms, and bathrooms are communal. Each building has one single-sex house, but aside from these houses the buildings are co-ed, with separate bathrooms. Building I has a lot of lounge and meeting space, as well as a computer lab, kitchen, laundry facilities, bike and trunk rooms, etc. Building II has the mail room, a large lounge, laundry facilities, kitchen, bike and trunk rooms, an exercise room, and is connected to Terrace, the (mainly) freshman dining hall. Building II is a little newer and nicer, but you cant specify. It has been said that these are the most social dorms. However, they are quite grungy: the lighting is bad, and the rooms are cinderblock with few windows (very prison chic).

AMR A / B Suite style buildings. Mainly comprised of two room suites with bathroom; there are some stand alone rooms with bathroom as well. Co-ed by suite. Each building has laundry facilities, a kitchen, and some lounge space (B more than A.) It has been said that these buildings are less social; this is vehemently denied by the people I know who live there. A and B are much newer than I /II, and theyre pretty nice: real walls, bright lighting, more windows.

Non-Quad Housing:
(These building are located right across the street from campus, basically across from the library. The vast majority of occupants are sophomores. It is very likely that freshmen living in these building will be paired with sophomores.)

Wolman Home of Wolman Station Dining Hall and the Depot, a convenience type store where you can use your meal plan points, as well as a mail room (I think?) Each wing of each floor has a lounge, and dedicated study room. The suites have kitchenettes. Wolman also has a substance free housing option and vacation housing. Vacation housing allows students (usually internationals or people who live really far away) to stay in the dorms during Thanksgiving and Spring Breaks, when the other residence halls are closed. You pay a couple hundred dollars more for this; its less than an international (or even cross country) air ticket, but you could also put the money towards a nice trip to explore the east coast a bit over breaks.

McCoy Basically the twin of Wolman, sans dining facilities. McCoy is a little nicer, having been recently renovated.

Hopkins Inn All girls overflow housing, in an inn next to Wolman and McCoy. The floor plan is a little wacky (it goes door, single, double, bathroom, so everyones always going through your room) and its sort of isolated.

MEAL PLANS:

Having eaten at Terrace for a paltry six weeks, I can testify that all the rumors about Hopkins food are, sadly, true. I think I was about a week away from scurvy. Some tips:

1.) Go for Block 125 with 500 points. Sure, its more per block, but you will not use all your blocks even on this plan. Plus, you can use all those points to buy real food at MegaBytes, the Depot, Jazzmans, and Levering.
2.) Try to get a fridge for your room / suite. There are grocery stores relatively nearby, and every dorm has some provision for cooking.
3.) If youre driving, go to a wholesale store (Sams Club, Costco, whatever) and get a few palates of drinks you like and snacks. People will mooch, but in the end it will be less expensive and healthier than relying on the vending machines for really late night snacks and such.

silver4 thnx a lot.... really informative.... will certainly help me in selecting housing....

correction: i believe its Block 150 500 Points...
isnt it techincally illegal to have fridges in AMR I/II and A/B? not like it stops people anyway

So we are able to select between AMR I/II and A/B? Is there a possibility that you will not always get your first choice?

Kams, very true on the blocks, though you can get a Kosher (and I think Hallal) block 125 plan.

Not true on refrigerators: they're allowed, but they can't exceed 4 cubic feet. In Wolman and McCoy, they're built in as part of the kitchenette.

can you rent fridges on campus?
i remember some1 saying, it may have been you silver4, that most ED students (since they get first dibs on housing) fill up A/B.. then its luck of the draw from there... remember though, there are 3 random sorts for housing. 1st for ED students who turn in their contracts by a certain date, then for RD students and ED who turn it in by a certain date, and then for all the lazy/slow people who turn it in later.
