Selecting Spring Civil Engineering Courses (if not yet a Civil Engineering major)

Hi,

I am trying to understand the process at Virginia Tech for registering for Civil Engineering courses, if you are not yet a Civil Engineering major. My son is in his first semester, but due to credit from AP courses he has many of his prereqs met and is ready to start taking Civil Engineering courses next semester. He is planning on applying to the Civil Engineering program for the spring semester but he cannot request any of the courses for this major right now. Has anyone here been in a similar situation? Will he be able to apply for this major and add classes for it before the start of spring semester?

Has he met with his adviser?

He was able to meet with his advisor. Apparently he will be able to add classes starting Dec 11, but it is still not clear to me how this can happen if these are Major-restricted classes, since he will be applying for the major at the same time.
