Selective Service @ FAFSA??

So my SAR gave me this

We could not send your name to Selective Service as you requested because you did not give us enough information, you are outside the age range for registration, or you did not sign your form. If you are male and at least 18 but not yet 26, to receive aid you must do one of the following: (1) answer "Male" to Item 21 and "Register Me" to Item 22 by clicking 'Make FAFSA Corrections' on the 'My FAFSA' page and also provide information for Items 1, 2, and 9, (2) complete a Selective Service registration form at your local post office, or (3) register online at Selective Service System: Welcome. If you are a male who is age 26 or older, you must check the Selective Service Web site at Selective Service System: Welcome. Select "registration info" and then "Who Must Register?" for more information. Contact Selective Service at 847‑688‑6888 only after reviewing the SSS Web site information. You must resolve your registration status before you can receive federal student aid. You are exempt from registering if born before 1960.

Should I put "Blank" b/c I even tried to go to sss website?
Btw, I'm 15.
I initially put register me.
Would that affect my federal aid?

If you aren’t 18, you don’t need to register yet.

^Are you going to colleges at 15/16?

It won’t affect your FAFSA processing, but the school will have to resolve the flag they will get regarding your SS status. The processor must have a hard minimum for age — meaning they can’t register you if you are under a certain age.

Just a reminder that it is essential that every male register for the selective service at 18, whether or not they are going to college. There are students who are denied federal financial aid many years later because they didn’t register when they were younger.

I can’t get back into yet to check because the FAFSA is apparently down every Sunday until 11 am, but I was having issues with this item because it wouldn’t let me continue without saying yes even though my S isn’t 18 yet. I think it is a FAFSA bug. He will be 18 before he gets the rest of his admissions decisions and, therefore, his F/A packages. This is a confusing mess with the forms due before he’s 18.

I think you have to be 17 years 3 months to be “pre-registered” for Selective Service. That would be why the OP had the problem he had.

@BarnardMom – you should say “no” to “are you registered” and then “yes” to “do you want us to register you”. As long as he is almost 18 this will work fine. My older DS was 17 when we filed, and didn’t turn 18 until a month into his freshman year, but had no problem getting his aid disbursed.
