I logged into myFAO today and I got a new notification that I needed to register with the Selective Service. What is this, is it important, and how long do I have to do this? Will I not get financial aid if I don't do this in time?

THe problem is that I just turned 17 less than 2 months ago and the Selective Service says I can't even apply until I'm at least 17 years and 3 months old (which will be on May 23rd). Even than, they'll just hold that information and I won't actually even be registered until I'm 18.

Will this be a probelm for my financial aid?

When you filled out FAFSA there was a question that asked you if you wanted to sign up for Selective Service. Did you say yes? Legally, all 18 years old and over males are required to sign up for the service and if you don’t, you won’t receive financial aid. Your situation is different since you are only 17. Call FAO and tell them you can’t apply until May and explain about the situation. Go from there. You can also call Selective Service System at 1-847-688-6888.

It will only be a problem if you attain the age of 18 and seek financial aid. Don’t let them bully you into registering early or at a time when you are not legally obligated to do so.

I personally find the archaic requirement of men having to register for a non-existent draft not only an abomination, but extremely sexist.

I forgot to sign up and I still got my Fin Aid. You certainly will be ok until you’re 18, and even then you’ll probably be fine until they send a reminder.
