Byond all of this politics, the reality is (as evidenced by other threads) failure to register in a timely manner will create massive headaches later in life.
If you don't do it because you are patriotic, or have a sense of duty, then do it so you can cover your a*@ further along in your life, when you try to do any number of things that will lead to a search of registration records.
ALso, I can tell you no one doesn't want a draft more than the military itself. History has proven again and again that conscription leads to low morale and inferior fighting forces.
To further defuse draft paranoia, consider that every branch has met its recruiting goals, and the Corps in particular has managed to meet its targeted growth to over 200,000 active-duty Marines in less time than was allocated for it. (Which kind of sucks because some nice bonuses just disappeared all of a sudden)
Ultimately what this means is that not everyone is of the "Not my kid" mentality, which means other peoples kids are "manning (and womanning) up" to defend "your kids" from any harm on their nice little campuses.
So have no fear, somebody else is gonna make sure your kid doesn't get drafted.
Also, Wis75, I see no problem with being "manly", as I am in a line of work where using controlled violence and measured escalation of force is the rule. I don't think your book "Guyland" is going to stop a 7.62 round or pick up my friend who is missing a leg. I also doubt you would chastise the firefighter carrying you out of a burning building about his "manliness".
Apologies for the length.

If the draft is reinstated, I myself will be on the first plane to Toronto. Screw the country. I have to save myself first.

Don't forget the SS is a duty. If it was to be activated it would be your duty, as an American male, to serve in the armed forces if called.

That duty is payback for the services the country renders you for your whole life.

Bollocks. The payback for the services the country renders you for the rest of your life is INCOME TAX. You talk as if the government is some kind of charitable organization. It's not. We BOUGHT those services from the government and the price paid is the amount of your income tax bill. Plain and simple. Everything else above and beyond paying income tax that the government asks you to give up involuntarily is extortion and theft. In other words, you, I or anyone else on this board, owe the government NOTHING above and beyond income tax.

gstein - all good but the purpose of the draft is not to fill the military - it is to fill the INFANTRY.

Maybe that was true in WWII, but not in present times. Modern warfare is very different than it was then.

My point was, if in today's society we are all about "equality"... we should address that concept in all matters; such as the draft.
