Selective service system

Hey all,

Just now I received mail from the selective service system… can someone explain to me what this is? The first paragraph says “our records identity you as an applicant for, or recipient of, financial aid and one who may be required to register with selective service, but has done so.” I’ve only been offered the 5500 loan after I did the FAFSA… my efc is above 30k. Doesn’t everyone that applies for the fafsa get this loan?

If anyone can help me understand this better, I would highly appreciate it.

The email you received says “…has done so,” or does it actually say “…has not done so”?

The Selective Service System would, in the event of a national emergency and at the direction of Congress, be used to select and induct young men into the armed forces. Every male U.S. citizen and male immigrant is required to register for the Selective Service upon turning 18, unless an exemption applies. Federal law makes an individual who must register and has not done so ineligible for federal student aid, including federal student loans.

Are you not a male US citizen or PR?

If you are 18, and have not registered for the selective service, you must go do it: https://www.sss.gov/Home/Registration

My daughter is being employed by her university this summer and part of the paperwork involved included proof of selective service registration for the males over the age of 18. So don’t be surprised if you need proof of registration for other things in the future.
