I know you have to sign up for Selective Service when you turn 18. I am a 17 year old high school senior and I don’t turn 18 until around one week before college starts. Will that cause problems when financial aid gets processed? I’ll sign up the day I turn 18 but its so close to when college starts, I want to avoid any type of problem.
I think you can sign up 3 months before you turn 18. You may have to explain that you are in compliance even though your answer is ‘No I haven’t registered yet.’
If you apply for FAFSA there is (was?) a box to check that says “automatically register me”.
@“Erin’s Dad” Thank you! I didn’t know that.
Just click yes when it asks if you’ve registered for the selective service. Once you hit 18 it will happen automatically.
It is in FinAid Web: “Student is not yet 18. (For federal aid purposes, if a student is not yet 18 years old as of the date the FAFSA form is submitted, he is eligible for federal student aid this award year even if he turned 18 shortly afterward and has not yet registered. Such a student would need to register to be eligible for federal student aid in subsequent years.)”
