why is uiuc not as selective as other top engineering schools considering its 4th in the nation , i know they have about a 1350 sat avg for eng but still seems no where as selective as mit , stanford and berkeley schools with which it is supposed to be near to in terms of engineering ??

U of I will inherently be less selective than MIT and Stanford because those are private universties. Selectivity isn't the biggest factor in terms of rankings. U of I has a high ranking because its engineering faculty is highly distinguished and there is a lot of cutting edge engineering research going on in the college of engineering.

Keep in mind that U of I is a public school and has rolling-admissions. This means that many in-state students who apply early can easily get admitted as long as their stats are above a certain threshold.

But remember a lot of those students end up dropping out of engineering. U of I only retains the higher percentage of students for engineering. I'm sure the average ACT/SAT of my chem class went up after first semester. It is just so large that they can afford to admit just about anyone. But people are still cut and it is still very selective. More than one thinks.

neway im comin ther lets hope i do not regret the decision

i realize u thnk its not very selective cause u got in with a bad average adn SaT score but that was by mistake
dont worry everyone else in engineeirn is a lot smarter than you so no problem thr

well the people who know my genius and i both know that some stupid standardized test and school grades which i dont study for mean nothing , so quit whining dont be jealous my man rushank no offence some ppl have the genius some ppl dont unfortunately u dont

UIUC's engineering course is very tough. Don't underestimate their engineering department or base it off of scores or whatnot. And please don't insult without right grammar/punctuation. It pains me.

Engineering usually admits about 60%. UIUC, unlike many, does not believe in encouraging lesser qualified students to apply and it actually takes steps to discourage it. That is why its app and its web-pages always publish the GPA/ACT middle 50% ranges of admittees from the prior year and state that if you are not in that range, you will need to demonstate something exceptional in your essay to be admitted. That resulted from a vote made by the board in the 1990's in which they expressly decided they were not going to try to raise their USNews ranking by increasing the number of applicants so it could reject more. Instead, they voted to develope actions to discourage applications because they knew they would get a large number regardless and they wanted to save the money that would be necessary to review even more. In other words, for all those high school students who believe selectivity is somehow an important factor to prove a college's worth, UIUC decided it was worthless.

haha I think so too b/c I just took a physics test . . . don't tell me that U of I is any less of a school than another just b/c it's public. I had to put up with that elitist attitude for years at a Catholic school.
