Selectivity by major at Rice

Are different majors at Rice easier/harder to get into? I've heard engineering and hard sciences are harder to get into; is this true? Should I apply as a social science major (econ) to improve my chances? thanks.

bump, if anyone knows, please enlighten me.

shoot, really?

well...fwiw, architecutre applicants get their own essay...

yes, sciences and engineering are more competitive (i'm applying to weiss myself), however it'd be pretty low to mis-state your intended major just to gain an advantage in admission. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be enough of an advantage to make any sort of a difference anyways. All of Rice is competitive, and stating a humanities/social sciences major without demonstrating interest in it (through your application) will only hurt you.

If you're interested in Weiss or Engineering, just put that. Honesty is always the best way to go.

Agreed. Be honest. If you come here, you advisor will be in the school that you selected...which will be annoying if then you decide to be in a different school. You can switch but that's just one more thing to do. Not worth your time.

hey, how is rice's campus? ive only seen pictures, and im kinda assuming that you've spent some time there, living in houston...

When I visited, I thought it was lovely. Very impressive.

My intended major is economics, but I'm also interested in physics or astrophysics, so I'm not really trying to gain an advantage or anything. How easy it is to double major?

double majoring is super easy!!!

lol (10 characters)

When we went to the information session, the admissions officer even mentioned that some students choose to triple major because its such a simple process.

Architecture is VERY SELECTIVE. There are about 200-250 applicants and only 35 acceptance letters with an ultimate freshman archy class of around 25. Honestly, scores don't matter as much the portfolio.

Probably the most selective program at Rice is the Baylor/Rice program as only 15 students are selected. My friend is one right now, actually. He was adorned with leadership positions, extracirriculars, special talents, and leadership conferences. Plus, it helped that his scores were good, and that he came from an esteemed HS -- Bellaire HS here in Houston. He also interned at a hospital here in the medical center.

Hope this helps.

PS--
Rice's campus is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. I've been everywhere. It's amazing! I would LOVE to attend Rice as a freshman archy. I applied interim decision.
