Nice to see Northeastern pass Boston College in both sections of the SAT score.

What is going on with the University of Illinois SATs CR versus Math??? They are so discrepant!

Most Illinois kids take ACT and SAT is mostly for OOS who go to Illinois for engineering. ACT distribution more normal. Median ACT math is about 28. Only 43% score 30+.

Not to mention

[Inequality among students rises - Business - The Boston Globe](<a href=“Wealth gap limits equality of education - The Boston Globe”>Wealth gap limits equality of education - The Boston Globe)

<a href=“Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs”>Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs;

Indeed…this list is a bit misleading. As mentioned above Illinois has a substantial minority (only 25% of all students) submitting SAT scores. The Illinois ACT Math range is from 26 to 32 with an ACT composite range of 26 to 31. The composite ACT range for Hopkins (with a 45% submission rate) and Williams (37% submission rate) is 30 to 34.

*If we were to compare engineering major ACT and Math SAT scores from Hopkins and the other elite private schools to say Caltech, the discrepancy would be even smaller than what is portrayed here and much larger than state schools like Illinois.

sorted by ACT 25th percentile

percent submitting ACT, ACT 25th, ACT 75th, name of school

^Your data is wrong.

Just a quick inspection, Columbia is 31-34, Hopkins is 30-34, Dartmouth is 30-34.

I don’t know why you posted this stuff with the “selectivity based on test score” disclaimer anyways. Stanford has lower test scores than several of the other elite privates, yet few would argue Stanford is less selective than Caltech.

WashU… DA HECK? So why do you have Tufts syndrome?

WashU cares a lot more about scores than most other elite colleges, and not just for its undergrad.

^that and the fact that it uses a large amount of merit scholarships along with Vandy to buy top applicants that wouldn’t have considered the school otherwise.

Blah, I think you are using old numbers. According to the US Dept of Ed, for example, Columbia’s ACT range was 31-34 in 2011, not 2012. The numbers I posted are the most recent available from the US Dept of Ed as reported to them by the universities according to USDOE definitions and instructions.

Interesting list although I would have sorted according to the sum of the ranges since 29-33 is better than 29-32. Same with the SAT list. I wonder if schools like NU which are climbing the rankings board are doing so by placing greater emphasis on test scores than other parts of the app. We’re actually looking for such schools since my son’s test scores are better than his gpa.

collegehelp, check your numbers. The sources I provided for JHU and Dartmouth are reported from the colleges themselves in the common data set. This is what the colleges submitted to US News for the most recent fall 2012-2013 freshman class for ranking and reporting purposes.

The Common Data Set might have old data, don’t know. The Dartmouth web site agrees with the ACT number I posted above. Not sure about Hopkins.

^Common data set is the only reliable the source of truth.

I misread your dartmouth entry as 29-34 initially (saw 29% submitting as the 25th percentile)… 30-34 is correct based on common data set and other sources. But there are other errors in your list.

collegedadnh- I see what you mean about adding the two scores. On the other hand, some schools are at the ceiling on SATs (800) and ACTs (35) which might place them at a disadvantage. The ACT max is 35, isn’t it?

No, 36…

The Math 25th percentile at Rutgers dropped by 70 points 2002-03 to 2012-13. CR was stable and Math 75th was stable. Curious.

And, what is going on at Northeastern??? Their SATs increased by over 100 points in the same time frame!! Is Northeastern hot or are they “cooking the books”? What are they doing to attract better students, if anything??

^Those who wanna tease Northwestern would have to come up with something different. :D
