My DDs went to an all girls school. They all had to take a self defense class in order to graduate. Why would you assume a self-defense class would teach females to “stand and fight?” At least in my DDs’ classes, the whole thing was about how to avoid danger and how to escape if you were unlucky enough to encounter it.

One of D1’s classmates successfully used her training to escape an man who turned out to be a serial rapist. This happened during her first or second week at that University.

Exactly! They are not teaching these young women how to get the upper hand in a bar room brawl!

Nrdsb4- I am not “assuming” anything. My post was in context to previous posts-please read the previous posts. I have martial arts experience and have taught my own daughter how to defend herself. I am not against self-defense training- a good instructor will be clear about the differences mentioned.

Merely pointing out the smartest thing to do- I never said self-defense classes were bad or useless.

Are we to believe that there is a movement nowadays in self defense classes targeted at women that encourage them to “stand and fight?” Is this really even an issue? I find it hard to believe, but maybe times have changed.

Taking a few defense classes and get into hand to hand combat in a bar is just as stupid as taking a few classes in using handgun and thinking you can go into a shoot-out with a bad guy.

I would suggest that the majority of college students do not have the time to learn to shoot as much as the majority of the bad guys.

Of course unless you are suggesting that the bad guys are not armed? You do have some advantage if you go and shoot an unarmed man but then, I’d would be wary of the consequences.

@rumrunner I am very familiar with the Fenway area because I park there for work. If there is a concert, there will be a lot of people around between the venue and the Kenmore T station, which is where I assume she will be getting on the T. It is a short walk. The T will have lots of people on a Friday night. They will be fine.

Right, and I would sincerely hope that college campuses are not awash in guns anyway. Lots of very young adults living in close quarters + lots of guns = a really really bad idea.
