self-harm

I have a friend who compulsively does things to hurt himself when he's frustrated. Tonight he asked me to restrain him so he wouldn't screw up his life even more. I find this very disturbing and think he should get help. He's amenable to the idea, but his parents are skeptical of psychiatry and he's afraid to approach them. How can I help him get the help he needs?

how old is he?

He’s not a minor, but he lives with and is financially dependent on his parents.

If you live in an area with a community help center, maybe you could get help there. Or if you have a friend who has gone through that before, you could ask him/her. Good luck though, that’s tough.

Colleges usually have someone there to help. If he is beyond their help, they can recommend that he goes to someone else.

Somebody needs to bash his parents’ heads against a wall until they get some sense knocked into them. Your friends needs to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist, depending on the severity of his problem.

I’ve found this site to be useful:

if he’s in college, try to get him to seek the available counseling services…
