self-help

Hey, just had a quick question on the "self-help" portion of the finaid package. I managed to cover my $2600 self help with merit scholarships - how does that affect my financial aid package? will it show up as a scholarship credit like the yale scholarship?

thanks

Yes, it will show up as scholarship credit. You won’t have to work and if you have left over scholarship money, it can be used as credit for other things.

[Yale University Financial Aid > About Outside Aid](<a href=“Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services”>Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services)

thanks sgtpepper08 - can i still hold a job nevertheless throughout the school year? what “other things” can it be used as credit for? besides a laptop

entomom: i read the website already, but it also said that self-help isn’t deducted from the bill since it has to be earned, but I had already “earned” it with merit scholarship

the rest of your credit can used to buy things at the bookstore (i.e course books lol which are really expensive) and other stuff at durfee’s and where ever you can bursar. and yes, you can still get a job. i didn’t work last year, but i’m going to this year even though my scholarship is renewed.

really? thats great! I had e-mailed the financial office, and they said that scholarship money couldn’t cover textbooks

^ Wait, I thought that, if your scholarship is worth more than the self-help, the difference would be used to reduce the amount of Yale grant you got… Is this wrong?!

^no that’s not true. well it wasn’t for me. my left over money (like $2k) was in credit and i used to it buy books and other stuff at the bookstore and other places where i could bursar.

Yes, but I thought you might pick up on these parts of the link:

“If allowed by the awarding agency, a merit scholarship may also cover the cost of a computer, up to $2500 and with proof of purchase, for incoming students.”

“Yale scholarship is reduced if the total amount of merit scholarships exceeds the amount of Student Effort that can be replaced. The parent contribution cannot be replaced by outside resources as Yale meets need 100%: if the total of merit scholarships exceeds the Student Effort component, the need for Yale scholarship is decreased.”

yes, thank you - i read the entire page. sgt pepper - are there other students like you who received scholarship money as credit? were there any special circusmstances in your finaid plan?

that would be really nice if we could bursar, less money would go to waste.
