Self Preping for AP exams!

Hi,
i am currently a sophomore in a prestigious private school.
For junior year, i am taking the following AP:
Physics B
US history
Biology or Comp Science AB (its one of the other)

I am thinking of studying for these by myself:
Environment Science
Mandarin (i am a native speaker)

I was just wondering how difficult it is to study for these APs if i am not taking the course.
I am requesting feedback on the difficulty of these two tests also.
Also, will this be hard because i will be taking the PSATs, SATs and The ACTs next year?

Thanks, all input is appreciated.

if you start at the beginning of the year and practice enough during the week, you should be able to do it.

your PSAT/ACT/SAT shouldnt have much, if any, affect on your ap’s since most of them are spaced out by at least half a month, and that’s only if you pick the dates closest to the AP’s.

good luck!

I think self-studying is great, and doable (ES isn’t that bad). But, if I may ask, why are you taking chinese? Unless you decide to major in chinese/chinese literature, I think your money can be well-spent in other places. Chinese AP present itself in a delicate situation with the curve for 5 set at >85%, and I think you would get your desired effect if you choose another course. AP Stat?

…she’s a native speaker. lol

i think you have a good chance with both of them. i have a friend who self-studied chinese, and she got a 5. good luck!

No point in self studying either.

Chinese - no point if you’re a native (proves nothing)
ES - not viewed as much by colleges

Okay I’ll get to the point. APs aren’t for “look-goods.” Colleges will know your background and your relative strength in a foreign language so taking an AP in something that you can ace in easily is like taking Spanish AP when you just moved from mexico two years ago. Of course it can’t count against you, but if you take it just because you already have the ability to do so, and do it well, I suggest you pursue another course.

But again this is how I think. Maybe you are going after the AP scholar ( by total test number?). But the point is, take something that has more impact than just a number on a piece of paper.

Seriously, consider stat.

if you’re native, probably don’t have to study for it anyway.
just walk in and ace it.
try psych, it’s more interesting than ES

thanks for the feedback.
As for the AP Chinese, a 5 is a possible ticket out of language in some colleges.
Also, i plan to spend only a total of like 5 hours reviewing for the AP chinese. Im mainly going to waste my time on AP ES
I plan on doubling on AP Bio and AP Physics B next year in addition to AP US, and Possible AP comp science.
I am going to double on AP stats and AP Calc BC next year, as well as double on AP Chem and AP Physics C.
So i dont see a point in studying for AP stats.
I want to stand out from the other 3.95-4.00 kids who have like 6 APs. I going for 12 APs.

As for the money, its $86 a test and its for a good cause. My parents are glad to cough it up.
I am interested in hearing if anyone has self prepped for an AP test and their experience with it.

I thought that next year there will be no AP Computer Science AB anymore.

my school still offers the course so i assume that the AP Comp science remains.

5-month bump or so. :p

I’m a sophomore and I’m taking Stat, Psych, and U.S. History for my APs this year…
and I have to say that I agree with kxn.
Psychology is awesome.

If you don’t want to take the class, I’ve heard it was the easiest AP exam (or at least one of the easiest). I’m sure you could go to your school’s textbook office and ask them for an AP Psych textbook; reading the textbook is half the battle.

As for review… I guess Barron’s?
My teacher gives us a review packet thingy at the end of each chapter before our test. You might be able to ask the Psych teacher something of the similar sort?
Unless he or she is a stickler and demands that you are in the class…

:)

I am also taking APUSH this year
and I am planning to take AP Chinese and self study AP Psych and AP Human Geography
