Self-Study 2 AP's as a Freshman

Hi,

I am a freshman in high school and I have a relatively light course load. I have been planning to take 2 AP Exams this year:

AP World History
AP Calculus BC

I am currently taking Honors World Studies and Honors Precalculus. However, I have a comprehensive knowledge of Precalculus and got an 800 on the SAT Math Subject Test Level 2. I started learning integrals a couple weeks ago, and am taking a Calculus I course from UPenn on Coursera. As for the world studies, I have been reading the online version of World Civilizations: The Global Experience by Stearns et al. I am currently on Chapter 3.

Do you guys have any advice for me on whether it would be feasible or not? I am willing to spend 3 hours every night for both subjects on weekdays and 5 hours on weekends. I would really appreciate any replies as I need to register very soon.

Thanks in advance,
pidude

You really gonna study that much?

Haha… yeah I guess that doesn’t seem realistic. But for the weekends I am willing to spend 5 hours… and maybe 1 hour and 30 minutes on weeknights.

it’s definitely doable with a huge time commitment. not sure you’ll cover all the material in BC in a calculus I course though.

This is the syllabus: https://s3.amazonaws.com/coursera/topics/calcsing/SYLLABUS_SVC.pdf

Does that cover all BC topics?

yup it’s doable. i’m only taking algebra 2 and i’m a freshman!! you’re so lucky lol. i’m self-studying the “easy” APs: statistics and psychology! and i only study heavily during the weekends and like thirty minutes each night, lol. good luck :D

Good luck with AP Stats and AP Psych. I have heard they have some common concepts. I recommend that you use 5 Steps to a 5 500 AP Statistics Questions to Know by Test Day (took the class last year; the book really helped).

bump…
Anymore advice? I need to know really soon.

Nope wait until you take the class. I had a long message but the page refreshed :frowning: and I’m going to simply answer with this. I wouldn’t but it’s up to you.

Could you please provide a (short) specific reason for why it would be a bad idea?

Well had one but it disappeared. But I guess I can sum it up again. Basically some students aren’t motivated and procrastinate, something the class will eliminate. I’m not saying you can’t do it or anthing but most people work better with structure. Also you will have just started HS and I beleive that self-studying 2 APs would be pressuring (but once again not impossible). Also you want to take Calc BC, with only some knowledge of Pre-Calc. Well I’m currently in Calc AB and the concepts are completely different than Pre-Calc. It would be like trying to take Algebra before knowing how to multiply and divide. If your going to take the BC test, I would take the AB class self study the last 3rd that makes the tests different. Also the problem with AP historys is not the multiple choice (especially if your a history buff) but it is the writing. AP writing (FRQs abd DBQs) are VERY different from tradtional writing learned in English classes. So for these reason I wouldn’t do it but once again it is possible if you want to do it.

So much for short (well it’s not that long)

I have a comprehensive knowledge of precalculus so that analogy does not really apply. I understand that the concepts are completely different (I am halfway through a calculus course on Coursera). Also, I am aiming for an certificate of distinction from one of the online courses I am taking so hopefully this will keep me motivated. Also, I am very passionate about math (I study and do math problems for fun) so procrastination should not be an issue. One of the main reasons, I do not want to wait until next year is because I know a lot of Calculus topics already and I don’t want to be bored in math class for a whole year again. I am worried about the essays for WHAP though. However, I have requested my world studies teacher to help me with my essays and she has agreed.

Like I said it’s not impossible. Here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1460190-jump-pre-calc-bc-large.html
