Is it very hard to self study and get at least a 3 on this exam? I would like to fulfill the Art GE requirement at my college.

Here are the best sources:

The best textbook for self-study is A History of Western Art by Laurie Schneider Adams.
The best prep book is REA’s AP Art History - it totally killed the 2009 exam
The best brief overviews of art history are The Annotated Mona Lisa and The Annotated Arch
Also you should buy the just released 2009 AP Art History Exam at the College Board’s online store.

I’m self-studying the exam and would really like to get a 5… So far I’m buying just The Annotated Mona Lisa–will that be enough?

The Annotated Mona Lisa is very good. However, it will not be enough. The Annotated Mona Lisa only covers paintings. It does not cover sculpture or architecture. You need a prep book that covers the full scope of art history. I recommend REA’s AP Art History. As I noted above, it totally dominated the just released 2009 AP Art History exam.

I have been using REA for basically a complete self-study, and I got like a 95% on the 2004 multiple choice without even reading all the chapters. However, the bookmakers had access to that released exam when they made the book, so take that with a grain of salt. I’m sure they included everything on that exam into the book.

Art History is going to be a hard one to self-study for, especially in less than a month. I’m in the class right now and we have yet to finish all the content. 5,000+ art pieces is quite overwhelming.
