Self study ap chem - who's done it and some advice please?

Whoever has self studied ap chem, I'd love to hear your experience or advice bout it. I'm considering self studying ap chem but I have not taken the basic chem source yet. Is it still possible for me to do well by self studying the course and on the ap test in may? ADVICE please and EXPERIENCES please about how hard or easy the course is and why. Thanks so much! :)

Why not just take the course first?

Try reading through the Official 2012 AP Chem Thread. The discussion is primarily about preparation at the moment since it is still the summertime. Hope that helps!

I took Chem Honors last year, and I took an AP Chem course outside of school. It took a lot of work, about 6 months of AP Chem outside of school for maybe 8 hours each week or so…but the class really helped for Chem Honors, everything was a breeze xD

I thought the AP test was incredibly difficult, to the point I wanted to give up in the middle. Definitely expected a 3, and considered cancelling…but in the end, I got a 5!

It’s definitely doable, but it will take a lot of work. Understanding with only a prep book may be a bit difficult though.

You probably should take the class.

what about if i use a prep book AND a textbook? would i be able to study well enough and pass the test then?

The prep book and text book is primarily used to prepare students for the actual CLASS. The exam? There’s no chance. I highly recommend that you find an online class to prepare for the AP instead of self-studying.

And plus, the prep book is used to help you review the material, not teach it. With the textbook, it does not give the full experience of being in the AP course and also does not provide the lab section of the course for the student.

Very true. There are just some things that can’t be learned in books.

phenolphalene: know this word [if its spelled right :p]

u should take the class for chem, u can self study bio or physics or envi sci
