self-study ap english

Okay, I'm a rising junior and I'm taking the AP chem and AP euro classes at my school. I want to take another test so I can be eligible for one of the ap awards. Writing is a natural strength for me... any thoughts?

Which AP English test, Language or Literature? In either case, you should read a lot, especially classics, and practice writing essays with a strong thesis.

I was thinking about taking language this year and lit when I'm a senior... thanks :)

Go for it! I also consider myself a writing person...I took Lang this year with no prep at all and got a 5.

I think if you are a good writer and read a lot... AP English Lang and Comp is the test for you ..... Honestly, the multiple choice is kind of hard- they put many difficult and time consuming passages that take you some time to analyze (much harder than SAT).... but for people that read (especially older literature)...its fine and could be fun (if AP exams could be fun?).... The FRQ are great because you get to be creative and fun in your essays (i mean come on, how great is writing about pink flamingos) .. you just have to love to write, and write well .....AP English is not an easy exam- but if you truly enjoy literature and writing, you will do fine ......
Btw, I got a 5 with no review books and a ridiculous class that did nothing..you really cant prep for this exam...its either your good at it or not.....
Good Luck!

I thought the Eng Lang mc was pretty entertaining but the essays were a drag.

haha...wow, i totally felt the other way..... for me, the MC was really annoying (the only one i liked was the one about how people interpret signs)

I didn't really like the prompts much. lol.

you didnt like the pink flamingo one?

You can't take either ap english classes at my school until you're a senior, so I have no idea what goes on in these exams... what sort of things do they ask on the mc section?

I think the most important thing is to be familiar with the format of the FRQs, so you can pace yourself.

The MC isn't all that different than the SAT CR. The questions mainly focus on close reading/analysis, but you should also be able to recognize different lit devices (apostrophe, personification, paradox etc)

I totally messed up on the pink flamingo one. I kept on using words like imagery and diction and I didn't really have much coherency. I kind of knew what to say but I didn't really write it. Yuck

you cant really study for the AP English test.
it tests you on skills in english that you have been accumulating since 1st grade.
only thing you can do is take several practice tests to get hang of it and memorize a relatively short list of literary terms that appear frequently on the exam (allusion,diction,irony,personafication,etc..)

id say the only important thing for that is to get alot of sleep bc if you dont youll miss some of the stuff in the frq's

i didnt take the AP english class but took the exam anyways--ive never done very well on reading comp (on the SAT the passages make me mad caz theyre pointless and irrelevant) but i got a 5 on the AP Lang

the multiple choice i thought was easier than the SAT (its more difficult but the questions and passages arent as pointless)

FRQs werent that difficult--i especially enjoyed the last where you pretty much write on a certain topic

next year though there is a dbq...not quite sure what that is thought (theres an example in PR)

How people don't take the class and yet get a 5 on the AP tests is beyond me. I took AP Language and Comp this year, got an A both semesters, and got a 5 on the AP test. That's because I understood the rhetorical terminology used on the test. More power to you if you can get a 5 without taking the class though geez...

If you are generally good in english and have taken AP english tests before and know what they are like, go for it...

A dbq? In the packet I got from my teacher, he said we're supposed to study one or two major pieces of legislation (like brown vs the board of education etc.) and write an essay according to a prompt he gave us because there's a new synthesis question on the test involving stuff like that - anyone else hear this?
