Self Study AP Language and Composition

What is the best way (time to start, books to use, websites to use) to self study AP Language and Composition?

How easy is it to self-study this topic? Our school doesn't offer it, and I really want to get good at this AND get a 5 on the test.

Bump. Please, I really need help here. Also, anyone willing to start a Facebook group for all self studiers? We can help each other!

bump again…

Hello! I’m a junior and I haven’t taken the exam yet, but I have an awful teacher so I’m doing a lot of self-studying. My suggestions are to buy an AP Lang book (I love Cliff Notes) that contains practice tests. Take as many practice tests as you can!! The only way to get better on the multiple choice is to practice it frequently. You don’t have to do the entire test at once- I like to break up the questions into chunks, like 15 at a time. Always time yourself so you can get used to the time limits. I find that studying literary terms are helpful. My method of learning those is to define a new term each day in a spiral notecard container thing. As you do more multiple choice, it will reinforce your knowledge of them. Lastly, the practice book should help you in learning how to write the essays. Then, I would use this <a href=“AP English Language and Composition Exam – AP Central | College Board”>Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board; to get sample essay prompts. Try to write one a week and time yourself. The only way to get better at essays is to practice them, honestly.

The exam isn’t too hard if you know what kind of questions they usually ask on the multiple choice and if you can write a decent essay. Good luck!

Bump :)

People who speak a certain language actually study for that language’s AP Exam? top lel

@Decimation AP Language and Composition is one of two AP English courses. I’m trying to self study for that, not an AP foreign language course.

If there was an AP exam to NOT self study for, it would be this one hehe! It’s really hard to self study for an exam that isn’t really content based. It will be especially hard to grade the essays according to the CB scale by yourself. Do you have a teacher familiar with the course who will assist you?

@AnnieBeats One of my main reasons for starting in summer, is to get some of the memorization and concepts out of the way. During the school year, I will most likely work with an English tutor to both study for AP and help any of my grades regarding essays.

I realize it’s hard, but I think it’s possible. Do you know of any online program (free, perhaps a MOOC) that guides you through learning AP Lang?

You see, that’s the thing. There really is no memorization or content except for a few grammar rules and rhetorical devices. You just have to master the skills of writing. Anybody can get around 25 multiple choice questions correct out of 52 (I believe) without studying or being in the class. And if you get 9s on all 3 essays, that is a 5. Your priority needs to be on the essay. If you write maybe 6 or 7 of each essay throughout the year with a tutor to correct you and to give feedback, you could very well get a 4 on the exam.

@AnnieBeats I can definitely do that.

So should I be able to train myself for the MC and get help with tutor with the essay? Is that the best way?
