Self Study APUSH

I think I am going to self study APUSH this year. What are some good textbooks and review books to get? Also, how much of a challenge is this predicted to be?

American Pageant is a very good textbook and commonly used.

Barron’s is a good review book. About 250 pages long which is 1/5 the length of American Pageant. I personally thought it was one of the better Barron’s books. Concise but covered everything. Probably best for help with the multiple choice.

AMSCO is the most commonly used review book. Thicker and denser than barron’s but more detailed and gives A LOT of tips and exercises for the essays. Compliments Barron’s well.

Mr. Wallace’s APUSH review videos on youtube are very good as well and are based off of the American Pageant textbook.

Google for previously released APUSH multiple choice (I believe there are 5).

A good plan to follow would be to read all the way through to the American Revolution by the end of summer. Read from American Revolution to WW1 by the end of first semester. Finish the textbook by March and use the rest of the time you have for review.

P.S. You can just skim everything before 1750 and after 1991. Those time periods make up very little of the test. Don’t focus too much on the Indians or terrorists because they usually don’t show up.

I self studied, and I think I got a 5 (unless the College Board screwed up my score report or something, which I think is unlikely).

Seriously, it was tough, and it was stressful. I must emphasize, it is possible but difficult, so start now and do as much as you can over the summer. If you have an APUSH teacher, get in contact with him as soon as possible as (s)he could lend you any possible resources you might need such as a textbook, review material, etc. As for review books, I’d definitely suggest you get AMSCO (http://www.caroddoapclasses.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/apushamsco.pdf</a>). Also get the Barron’s flashcards and maybe even 5 steps to a 5 500 questions book. Those things can do wonders.

As for a textbook, I’d suggest the American Pageant (I think you can find pdfs somewhere by Googling) or Alan Brinkley’s US History: Connecting with the Past Book
