self study calc bc while in calc ab?

Hey guys I need some help deciding what to do. I’m enrolled in calc ab and would much rather be in calc bc but the class is full and there’s no chance of me getting in. I don’t want to have to relearn all the stuff calc ab will teach this year so should I just self study the bc portion? I thought precalc was pretty easy but i’m not sure how i’ll manage to self study the bc portion since I’ll need the ab stuff to build off of, so the only way i can really think of right now is learn according to bc curriculum and end up self studying the ab curriculum since i’ll need to finish that in 1/2 a year instead of a whole year. If any of you guys have taken this route, can you suggest a self study plan/tips?

This is very doable if you have the ambition. If your AB class is taught the traditional way, ie covers around 2 quarters of college material (hence the name “A B”) then essentially the main things you need to cover is Infinite series (Taylor, etc) and Plane and Polar curves which is probably about 6 weeks of normal studying time. You can probably start studying the new BC material in parallel with AB starting in February. Anytime before might be a bit early.

It’s pretty commonly done at my kid’s former HS each and every year. It’s a pretty strict cutoff to get into the BC class, so a lot of talented students get shut out of the BC class, so they wind up going this route. The AB teachers usually offers extra help and sessions for those who do take this route.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I’ll be speaking to my AB teacher about this and hopefully everything will work out

What year are you and why are you looking to do this? Sure, it can be done, but lots of things that can be done don’t make sense to do. You are spending time that could be used elsewhere - what are you gaining and what are you giving up?
