is it possible to self-study Eng Lit and/or Eng Lang.? if yes, how hard is it to do so.

I'm bumping this!

English Language would be easy to self study, I can imagine, as long as your interpreting/writing skills are really good. You don't need any prior knowledge of books or anything to write the essays or answer the MC.

English Lit, on the other hand, has some required reading... So you'd essentially have to be able to read and analyze recommended books on your own time (there's lists all over the internet about what books typically show up on the test). I personally wouldn't be able to analyze and interpret some of the English Lit books without the discussions that took place in class. In that respect, I can imagine Lit would be a little harder to self-study, since it doesn't COMPLETELY depend on your own writing skills.

In either case, I would recommend that your school provided a strong background in writing (regardless of if you had an AP class or not) and that you felt confident reading, analyzing, and interpreting.

My DS took both AP English tests without taking the AP English class. Just get the prep books and familiarize yourself with some literature you've read in high school.

AP Eng language isn't really hard to prepare for at all. The MC is rather like CR of SAT's, just more difficult. And the essays you just have to familiarize yourself with them and practice and know what the graders are after.

you can see my AP experiences at my post at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=203547

If you don't want to read that, I basically self-studied for 5 AP exams and got 5's on them, and took AP history (got 5) and AP english (4) in a class.

Even though I personally think I'm a good self-studier I probably would have bombed the AP english language if I hadn't taken a class. There's no possible way I could have self-judged my writing and writing quality, and even with someone helping a lot I got a 4, my only one.

Your mileage may vary, especially if you're a natural writer (I'm definitely not). I would be impressed if someone self-studied and got a 5.

If you take eng lit, eng lang is a joke (take both)
