Do you actually need to take an AP class to do good on the exam. Isn't it like the SAT critical reading section? Would it be easy to self study?

Multiple choice s somewhat similar to CR, though definitely harder, but self-studying should not be a problem if you are naturally good at analyzing literature. Same with the first two essays. The third essay requires you to write on a novel you've read, from memory, so it's something you need to be sure not to leave to the last second, but should also be studyable.

Basically: yes, you can self-study, but I'm certainly not going to guarantee you a good result...that depends on your natural aptitude, and the work you put into it.

You could probably self-study and get a good score, but you'd have to put a lot of work into it, unless you're super talented.
