I emailed a counselor about this.

Hi Ms. D_, my name's _ ___, incoming 11th grader. Since my counselor is out, I wanted to ask if it's possible for me take the AP exams and get credit if I self studied for AP Environmental Science and AP Language and Composition.

Dear ____,

You can sign up and take any AP test, however, you must actually take the course at the high school to receive school credits.

I don't know if it's 100% but do you think she means that if I self study for the tests then i'm able to take it in may and get credit for taking the test (1-5), and that I could send my grade to me college without taking those classes?

You will have the test scores to send to colleges for credit, but you will not recieve any high school credit.

The only way to gain high school credits is by taking the actual class in high school (duh). Now, there are alternate ways to take the class in high school, typically through duel credit and/or approved virtual courses through your high school. You can obtain credits though by taking the test for it through your school (if your school allows it).

The AP exams are meant for college credit, not high school credit.

Oh gosh, I really hope my school allows it. I thought all schools allow it. Thanks guys.

Notice the wording, “school credits”, which is referring to high school credits. Also, s/he says “You can sign up and take any AP test” meaning that yes, you can self-study AP whatever. Just to sum it up, you can take any AP test at your school, but the AP’s you studied will not count towards your high school credit.

Good luck with the self-studying!
