Big dilema. I live in South Texas, and I figured out colleges that consider geography basically EXPECT us to be English/Spanish bilingual. Which means I had to set out on the saga to be trilingual. I got a 4 on the Spanish Language AP exam so I is ready.

I found Japanese was a beautiful language. But my schools is truly flawed in that it ONLY offers Spanish [Tell me about it]. But normal language classes didn't work, so now I need resources to self study for Texas CBE, SAT II, and AP Jap before 12th grade. I'm starting 10th grade next year.

Japanese is not Spanish. Unless you speak another Korean or a Chinese language, everything but the English/French loanwords will be completely unfamiliar to you. And even the loanwords are often so mangled by the limited number of Japanese phonemes that many aren’t recognizable as English until you’ve been told.

Also, learning a character-based language is more like learning a language and a half, since except for the kana, the written and spoken languages are distinct from one another.

But if you’re willing to put in the time, it’s definitely worth it :)

AJATT.com is AMAZING. It’s doable. I’m studying for AP Japanese / JLPT 4… I’m going into my Junior year… then again, I’ve been self studying for a few years xD

i’m currently a freshman and i started self studying a couple of years ago using japanese.about.com and books/songs/dramas/whatever i could get my hands on until i began taking lessons. But note that I am chinese / english bilingual, which makes it easier to pick up the kanji. I have taken JLPT 4 / 3 so far and am halfway to jlpt 2. I would say yes, it’s possible, but it’ll take a lot of effort and time. SAT II is roughly a little harder than JLPT 4 imo, which took me like 1 year? And it’s honestly incredibly easy. AP Japanese I’m not sure, but it might be possible within 2 years! Really idk for AP Japanese. You can also go on the internet for JLPT - specific material. Just google it! Are there any lessons at community colleges or stuff in your area / city?

Speaking of JLPT, does it look good on college applications at all? Do adcoms know what to do with it, or to them is it just some mystery test without meaning?
