I am self studying an AP because I transferred into my school a little too late and by the time I realized I could take another AP class I liked besides from the two I’m currently taking it was too late. So now I’m self studying AP psych. Even though I didn’t take the class, does this still look good to admission officers? Or should I just focus on SAT subject tests since I have some time on my hands?
Worry about the two AP classes you are taking now, and get the SAT subject exams under control. If you think you want to have psych major in college, and you know there is no time to fit the class into your schedule, then it might make sense to self-study for that AP exam. But even then probably not. You would want to take your own university’s intor course for the major.
@happymomof1 Thanks for responding. I just want to know how I can make the most of time and have a rigorous course. Last semester of high school (when I first transferred) my counselor gave me two study halls for that one semester and another study hall for the second semester. I just feel like I’m not making the best use of my time and college will think that I’m lazy for it. What do you think I should do? Any advice or commentary?
No, it doesn’t matter to them. They want you in class, working in groups, participating, taking tests…
Spend time in subject test and, more importantly, your ECs.
No. Colleges don’t care that you self studied a class. Having a study hall does not always equate to a less-than-rigorous schedule. Sometimes the counselors are right.
@MYOS1634 Do colleges know how many study halls you’ve taken if they’re not on your transcript?
Well, they expect you to take a minimum of six classes per year, with five academic courses minimum, so if your 7th period is a study hall they wouldn’t know.
@MYOS1634 I had study hall 3rd and 6th period last semester and I am in a study this semester for 6th period. This means that I only took 5 classes last semester (all core classes) and six this semester. Is that too many study halls?
Yes.
Which may be true (or not). One thing that is true, though, is that it was last semester, so it’s water under the bridge. Overextending in future semesters is not going to change that. What your GC should do is explain the circumstances on the Secondary School Report.
@MYOS1634 Oh…ok :-S . I kinda feel hopeless at this point on how to improve my schedule’s rigor.
Well, what is done is done.
You could always try and take a summer class but basically you have what you have. It’s not the worst - some students only take four…
Make sure you take 6 academic classes next year and DO NOT overload on APs.
Can you list this year’s schedule and what you’re thinking of next year?
You’re right I guess.
My schedule:
Pre calc accel
Spanish 4 accel
Physics accel
APUSH
AP lit
Shape up( gym class)
@MYOS1634 ^^ ( forgot to tag you)
You DO have six classes, even if one is gym. So, you’re okay, especially since I’m guessing it’s mandatory and that will be mentioned in your school profile - colleges will know you could have taken another class but well.
What about next year?
Gym is only half a credit, but ya it’s a class. @MYOS1634
My schedule next year:
AP gov
AP Lang
AP Spanish
Econ
(Insert another business class for school credit)
Digital Video class
Film study
Advance scene studies
You need a math class. Since you were in precalculus account, see if you can take AP stats or calculus honors.
No, it doesn’t…because there is no evidence that you are self-studying.
They want you to take classes in your school because that is what you do in college.
If you want to self-study to get college credit, go ahead.
