@XxSkizzyxX What did you end up doing? If I decide to do one of these programs, how do i know which one to choose? I know immersing in the culture is the best way to learn a language, but my parents might not be up to spend that kind of money or to let me stay with a host family. What do I do?

@XxSkizzyxX I’m also learning Japanese! Can you tell me which app you have? I also need a book (just because working in a book is what works best for me) since the book my teacher uses just isn’t good and I need to review beginner topics. I want to take the JLPT N5 this year, but my teacher doesn’t think I’m ready.

Sorry I hijacked this post :-/

@LosingCrayon it’s alright, I used Tae Kim’s Learning Japanese app. It’s alright compare to other because it cover some of the basic a little better than other. Although it might be a little hard to understand, to me, it’s one of the best app that is free.

@ellesea What I came to conclude is to just take the risk and deal with the rest after I finish study abroad. Study abroad is a experience that you may not get a chance to do unless you plan on doing study abroad during college. Nothing is stopping you to study abroad except yourself. If your parents won’t help pay then go find a job that will hire you. If you still need some money, ask for donation and sell stuff you don’t need. The program all depends, to me, YFU is just prefect, it is almost similar to AFS but cheaper. If you got the money and pay for it by yourself, your parents does not have any rights to complain because it was the money you earn. There are lots of way to earn money.

It’s all up to you if you want to go or not. The only tip I’m giving you is important, “Don’t think about it, the more you think about it, the more you will not do it.” Keep that in mind and do what you have to do to study abroad. Read some of the blogs or watch vlogs on YouTube to keep you active and remind you why you want to go.

Sorry if there are mistake on there, if you need more answer, post it on the study abroad forum and you’ll get better answer than mine.

Duolingo. Totally free, great site.

I have a friend that learned to speak and understand Chinese primarily through watching Chinese dramas. So try to find something interesting in Italian to watch, I guess.

Time to hijack thread.

Anybody have any info about self-studying German or ASL?

I’m learning Italian right now from a free online course offered by Wellesley. If this thread were posted a couple of months ago I totally would have sent you the link to apply! If anything, I can share some of the Youtube videos from the course with you and anything else you might need.

But besides that, IELanguages is really great. Sorry if this is a repeat suggestion, but here’s their link!

I’m self studying German.

@Apollo11 IELanguages has great German resources, too. <a href=“Learn German Online - Basic German Phrases, Vocabulary and Grammar”>http://www.ielanguages.com/German.html

Also, if any of you have Tumblr I really suggest following or just checking out http://romancingthelanguages.■■■■■■■■■■/

Their blog is focused on Romance languages, but if you poke around the blogs they reblog and all, I’m sure you can find some more diverse ones.

They also posted a language learning masterpost which can be found here http://romancingthelanguages.■■■■■■■■■■/post/62060649869/language-learning-masterpost

I’ll see if I can find something. @sheridancaty THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I am following the tumblr and I would love to have the links to some YouTube videos.
