Self-studying A.P. Sciences - I need some advice please!

Hi there ;)
Ive heard that people self study ap courses in their own and then take the ap tests in may and if they pass colleges account that ap. I will be taking ap physics and ap us history and ap literature next year along with the basic courses of Spanish 3 and precalculus. My school does not allow a student to take more than one ap science over the course of high school so I was actually planning to self study the ap sciences next year. I'm going to be a junior and I want to self study ap bio and ap chem. I know I may sound a bit crazy and it probably isn't recommended to self study ap courses, let alone two in one year, but I want to know whether it's POSSIBLE to self study and pass the ap tests in may, hopefully with a 4 or higher. I'm willing to put in the time and effort but if it's going to be futile, I'd like to know too. Thanks :)

I really don’t think colleges (and many of the BS/MD programs) will hold your school’s rules against you. As long as you take a challenging load of coursework within the context of the classes available, you should be fine. Self-studying is definitely not expected. However, if you wish to self-study I suggest AP Bio over AP Chem. It’s more memorization than chem, and thus is easier to study individually. The Campbell textbook is highly regarded, and the Cliffnotes AP Prep book has been noted as the best review book. Good luck!

Sounds good thanks  I was actually thinking of self studying BOTH ap bio and ap chem…do you think I’d survive?

I would not suggest studying AP chem. While it is possible for AP bio, since as manu101 says, it is mostly memorization, AP chem requires a lot more understanding and problem-solving. Unless you have already taken a college-preparatory chemistry course, it will be very very difficult.

What manu101 says is entirely correct–schools look at you in the context of your school, not in comparison to the that kid from the #1 prep school in the US.

But I’m planning to self study to take the subject sat chem. next spring and I havent taken basic chem yet. But some schools I would like to apply to require a chem subject sat. So if I am going to self study for the subject sat chem I thought I may as well study for the ap chem test. Thoughts?

The chem SAT II is much more basic than the AP.
