I have a schedule conflict this year (ugh like every year) and I have to either take French III preIH (honors) or orchestra. GPA speaking, of course French would be better but I love orchestra as well (my two favorite classes, figures) so I'm trying to explore other options. I've checked night school/eschool options but the place I'm in is way more spanish favored and has no french classes. There is a credit by exam option and I think my teacher would be willing to help me out even though of course I would do most on my own.

Is this even possibly feasible? I am only a rising sophomore (I know it's early, I just want input on the schedule) so I can take a year off French and just carry it up to French IV but I'd rather not. Thanks!

At my kids’ HS, they were fine with kids self-studying music. My S & many of his friend self-studied band because of conflicts & the following year when there was no conflict they were able to take the course in the open slot.

Personally, I would think it’s much easier to self-study music (especially if you have private lessons) than self-studying a language. You should speak with the instructors & see what they recommend. The registrar at your HS should also have some ideas & recommendations, as I’m sure there are other students who have had this situation arise as well.

I’m going to be self-studying/private tutoring AP English and AP Lit and Comprehension either this year or next. It’d be best if you can obviously get private help.

My S self-studied AP US Gov & AP Environmental Studies. At their HS, lots of the kids self-study the AP English & AP Lit.

Personally, I think self-studying a language is tough, unless you have a tutor or similar situation. Self studying an instrument seems a bit easier, especially if you can sometimes practice with the band or orchestra & perform with them.

Well, sometimes school orchestra provides you with opportunities that private lessons can’t. For example, All-state often requires school orchestra participation. Keep that in mind.
