If you are self studying ap calc ab, do you HAVE to take the prerequisites, since you're paying for your own test. I'm just asking, since I'm not sure.

No, not necessarily. Each school has their own policy on whether they allow self studying or not though, so you’re probably going to have to talk to your guidance counselor and/or AP Coordinator despite the fact that you’re paying for the exam yourself. But just out of curiosity, what prerequisites are you taking about for AP Calc? Do you mean to say you haven’t completed Pre-calculus, or Algebra II? I can’t imagine being able to learn calculus without a solid grounding in algebra and trigonometry which are learned in these “prereq” courses. A lot of the times, the hardest part of a calculus problem is the simplification which is just a bunch of algebra and other manipulations.

To self-study an AP, you don’t have to take the formal prerequisite courses. However, when studying AP Calc AB, you may find that you need to teach yourself and/or review concepts that normally would be covered in Pre-Calc or Algebra II.

Thanks guys, great advice!!!
