Self-studying AP Calculus AB next year

What are some of your experiences with it? Which book is the best to learn it? Any input is great!

i tried it this year. I’m really the math kind of person. although you may think you are getting the concepts you probably aren’t. I would advocate against self studying calc

A good buddy of mine who is also a successful mathlete attempted to self-study for BC after taking and 5ing AB. It did not work. Of course, that’s not your situation, but it should show that Calc is not something you can selfstudy for easily.

I would also recommend against it. If you must, get Peterson’s and buy a textbook to do practice problems in.

Don’t self study Calculus. You will not be able to sufficiently grasp the concepts. You are not Newton. Take a course.

Don’t listen to that nonsense. I taught myself calculus i so I could take a calc II class at a local community college this year (5’d AP Calc BC this May).

Is it easy? No. Is it possible? Yes. I’m really a math person (it’s my declared major) so it’s possible. Use the MIT OpenCourseware video lectures, and I used my school’s AP textbook to self-study. It’s Calculus of a Single Variable by Larson, Hostetler, and someone else I think. Pretty decent book.

I may not be Newton, but I am quite smart and grasp theoretical math concepts quickly. Your mileage may vary.

Although I advocated against it, i dont think it isn’t possible. as seen from JDHarms post. However, it is very possible that you may not understand a concept and you won’t really have a teacher to turn to. Also, it isn’t good to “teach to the test” that won’t help you in the long term because you will not understand the full concepts behind everything. You’re calc skills will be very mechanical and you will not be able to apply them as well.

Definitely don’t teach to the test. You should NOT EVEN TOUCH an AP prep book until second semester. That way you won’t be tempted to just learn to “do” the problems without understanding them. Learn calculus I, don’t learn “AP Calculus AB”.

i agree with JD Harms’s first response. I was able to understand the concept of calculus, but then I realized I had many weaknesses especially with analysis of graphs. Good thing my friend helped me with it. If not, I would totally screw up on the AP exam.

i tried to teach myself calb AB in 11 weeks…COMPLETE FAILUR, got a 2 :(
