I am a current sophomore changing to another highschool next year. Sadly the school offers few AP courses, and the only one I'll be taking is AP World History. My original plan was to take a couple more AP exams, so I decided to self-study some of them. In addition to the AP World History exam, I'm planning to self-study for the AP English Language & Composition and Calculus BC exams. If time allows, I'm considering taking the AP Chem exam as well. I am fairly confident with Calculus as I finished my current year in Precal Honors with a 98%, and have had interest towards the subject throughout my academic life. For the AP Lang exam, however, my current English teacher told me that it was a course that required heavy teacher's instruction, especially on structuring arguments. I would consider myself a rather fluent English speaker, but I'm not actually sure about whether to self-study the exam or not. Would you say it's a self-study-able exam?

If you can get a well-educated editor that can critique you in writing, then you might be able to self-study AP Language. Reading persuasive essays and books are important as well. I recommend you read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Scarlet Letter, Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men, The Independence of Declaration, Civil Disobedience, Great Gatsby, and similar works. Basically the theme of AP Language (at least at my school) was the “American Dream”. Modern work as well as classical literature can help you get used to passage reading.

Good luck on AP Language if you decide to self study!
