Hello! I am currently a sophomore, and my first choice university if Oxford over in the UK. To even qualify for Oxford, you have to have 5's on at least three AP exams that cover the subject you wish to pursue. Since I want to study English/History (joint course they offer), I plan on having around 5 exams, 2 English and 3 history. Next year I will be a junior and will be taking the AP Lang and Comp class/exam. I was wondering, would it be possible for me to study AP Lit on the side and take that exam as well? I am a fairly proficient writer, and I read a lot of books for leisure (and no, I am not talking about "The Hunger Games" and "The Maze Runner." I read books by Shakespeare, Austen, Fitzgerald, the Bronte Sisters, Hardy, and other classic writers. I also am fond of poetry by Plath, Dickinson, Eliot, Shakespeare (sonnets), and Whitman). Would this be a good goal? If so, how exactly should I go about studying? Thank you!

If you are an English person, AP Lit should be a doddle for you- many schools don’t offer it as an AP, b/c the regular class is almost enough prep. Check out a prep book from the library so that you are familiar with the format, etc.

For prepping for Oxford, go spend time on the Oxford website- get really familiar with the English and History department pages. They will give you a LOT of information about what the program is like. Be aware that you will have to take the history aptitude test (HAT) the fall of your senior year, and that you will have to submit written work. Keep those in mind in your junior year- if there is no HAT testing near you, it can take a time to organize an alternative; and knowing what sort of written work you need to submit can be useful when you are deciding, say, what your topic for a school essay will be. For example, for a history or english assignment you might write a paper that reflects both subjects.

At the end of your junior year a thread called ‘Official Oxford Applicants for 2017’ (or something similar) will be opened on a UK website called the s t u d e n t room. There is also a thread called ‘I’m an American Applying to Oxford’. I know you will start lurking there sooner than that, but don’t plague them too much too soon (and anything before very late in junior year is too soon).
