I have a friend whose classmate gets like Cs but has all fives on his AP tests, including a crapload that he self-studies. Apparently, he just reads the textbook the day before the tests and just does really well this way. He's apparently going to have 17 AP tests by the time he's done.

meee-chem! :) :)

I got to a really small international school in Japan. (around 171 people in High School) Offering US/Euro/World/Both English/Both Calc/Chem/Bio/Physics/Stat/French/Japanese/Micro/Macro/Music/Studio which are all "electives"

You can pick “three elective classes” per year. (English, Math, Language are mandatory so they don’t fit as an elective) And you CANNOT get everything you want since there's max 5-6 people per AP and the times clash.

Since all three sciences take two years a piece, if you choose to take all three sciences you have filled all your “elective classes” for both years. Ditto with Studio Art. Meaning, then you can't take any other AP's other than English, Math, Language.

I plan to self-study, Comp. Politics and Psychology. I choose the things I really have a passion for. ^^ For a person that isn’t as talented in the sciences would self-studying environmental be over my head?( I have a very deep interest in the concept of environmental.) I took an honors level bio course frosh year in the states and then some bio class with the british/aussie curriculum this year (I also took just regular physics/chem. this year and SUFFERED and wanted to strangle myself, terrible suffering..ahh. anything related to math = NOT MY FORTE) soo out of my turmoil I can consider Bio something I excel at most out of all the other science things… ??? Since it's more memorization and not so much logic? xx I have no AP Bio knowledge to help me…

This is directed toward my JUNIOR year, I'm currently a Sophmore. My school does not allow Sophmore's to take AP's.

I'm something of a mildly prolific self-studier, and I don't feel like reading all seven pages of this thread, so I was wondering how much self-studying can help in college admissions. Would colleges even know?

Take the AP tests. Many colleges will be glad to see that you have scored well while still in high school.

For A Bump!

bumping this excellent topic. It can answer a lot of questions.

I read this topic around this time last year and now I have two 5's in Psych and Comp Gov after self studying =]

Next year I'm self studying Chem and both Economics.

My school is on a block schedule. We have to take one 90 minute class everyday and a 90 minute class every other day each year. Therefore, students can take 4 at most (because you are required to take health and gym). Which stinks so I have to self study. I really want to be an AP Scholar with Distinction.

next year, i think im gonna self study:
Macro
Micro
Eviro
human geo
maybe physics c em and mech

Great post! Did you use only study books (kaplan, PR,etc,.)...or did you buy text books?

...I'm planning to self-study World History...

So I've been noticing that some people here on CC say that they've self-studied for and took AP tests. Could someone please explain how you do that? I thought you had to be enrolled in the actual AP class in order to take the test...

It's as the word says: *Self-*study.

You study the material on your own and take the test; which isn't advised if you don't want to waste a lot of money for one test/you're not passionate about the subject.

How to Self Study in Four Easy Steps:

1) buy a prep book
2) read and memorize the info. in the prep book
3) take the test
4) rejoice or cry (depending on your score)

Best World History Study Book? Barrons?

^ Yes Barrons is the best for World.

so if i'm going to be a senior and havent self-studied any aps so far, but would like to self study Physics C E&M and Mechanics this year, how do colleges find out im doing that??? applications are due in the early winter/late fall. moreover, does it help my application further??

No it would not. The only way I could think colleges would know is if you had a teacher write about it in a recommendation.

OMG self-studying APs doesnt do ****. NO colleges will care, i 100% will guarantee u that.

find something else to do, christ. wont get through to msot ppl here, seeing as how some ppl have posted theyre self-studying for like 5...

what is a good book to use for self-studying ap psychology??? prep book + text book

barrons for psych - its the best
