Hi there ;)
Ive heard that people self study ap courses in their own and then take the ap tests in may and if they pass colleges account that ap. I will be taking ap physics and ap us history and ap literature next year along with the basic courses of Spanish 3 and precalculus. My school does not allow a student to take more than one ap science over the course of high school so I was actually planning to self study the ap sciences next year. I'm going to be a junior and I want to self study ap bio and ap chem. I know I may sound a bit crazy and it probably isn't recommended but I want to know whether it's POSSIBLE to self study and pass the ap tests in may, hopefully with a 4 or higher. I'm willing to put in the time and effort but if it's going to be futile, I'd like to know too. Thanks :)

Btw up till now I’ve taken the basic normal courses in biology and physics but not in chem.

I would advise you to self only Bio, this year, since you are already taking 3 APs. AP Bio is MUCH MUCH MUCH more manageable than AP Chem, especially if you are good with straight forward memorizing. You must devote A LOT of time for Bio if you want a five. Conversely, it is very easy to get a five if you devote a lot of time. You don’t have to study everyday starting in August, but practicing and reading is important. Since you have not taken a basic chem course, selfing AP Chem would be a bad idea. Most people struggle with chem even when they have a teacher, and end up getting a 3. Numerous examples if you spent 20+ per week on the board like me!
Again, selfing ap bio is a good idea. It’s probably the easiest science course to self, right after environmental. I selfed it this year, while taking the regular high school course and got a five :D

Any other opinions? Anyone think self studyng ap chem is doable in my situation?

The general consensus around here is AP Bio’s easy if you’re willing to put in the time, but chem’s nearly impossible to self-study because you need to do labs to really understand the concept. Chem’s more theoretical, while Bio’s just straight up memorization.

Source: My sister’s done AP Chem and is self-studying AP Bio. :)

I’m pretty much in the same situation as you. I’m taking a regular chem course my junior year, and since I selfed bio and did well, my teacher is pushing me to self chem. After reading this forum, i decided against it, since I don’t have a high school course to back me up. However, I wouldnt give a ready no to selfing ap chem senior year.

If you haven’t taken chem, it’s not a good idea to self-study AP Chem unless you’re willing to put a lot of time into understanding the concepts and doing problems or you’re good at math.

1 AP Science is certainly good enough for college consideration. Take either the Chem or Bio course and then take that exam. You don’t need to self-study the other one.
